Position Summary

Quality Clinical Research is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Clinical Research Lab Technician / Phlebotomist to support clinical research studies at our Omaha location. This position is responsible for collecting blood specimens from study participants, processing laboratory samples according to study protocols, preparing shipments to sponsors or central laboratories, and maintaining accurate processing and shipping records.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and collect blood specimens from clinical research participants.
  • Verify participant information and label specimens accurately.
  • Process samples according to study-specific laboratory manuals and protocols.
  • Centrifuge, separate, aliquot, refrigerate, and freeze specimens as required.
  • Package and ship biological samples to sponsors and central laboratories.
  • Maintain complete and accurate specimen-processing, temperature, and shipping logs.
  • Follow chain-of-custody and specimen-tracking procedures.
  • Monitor laboratory supplies, collection kits, and shipping materials.
  • Coordinate with clinical research coordinators to ensure samples are collected within required study timeframes.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory work area.
  • Follow applicable OSHA, HIPAA, safety, and clinical research requirements.
  • Report specimen discrepancies, processing issues, or shipping delays promptly.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; relevant college coursework or healthcare training preferred.
  • Phlebotomy training or prior blood-draw experience required.
  • Previous laboratory, medical office, or clinical research experience preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow written protocols and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Comfortable working with blood and other biological specimens.
  • Basic computer and data-entry skills.
  • Dependable, professional, and able to work effectively with research participants and team members.
  • Ability to safely lift and move laboratory or shipping materials as needed.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described below represent those normally required to perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

While performing this job, the employee may be required to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods during participant visits and specimen processing.
  • Sit, reach, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, and move between collection and processing areas.
  • Use hands and fingers for venipuncture, labeling, pipetting, opening containers, entering data, and operating laboratory equipment.
  • Perform repetitive hand and wrist movements and tasks requiring fine motor coordination.
  • Push or pull laboratory carts, supply containers, and shipping coolers.
  • Regularly lift and carry items weighing up to 25 to 50 lbs
  • Occasionally lift or carry specimen shipping coolers, supply boxes, or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Use appropriate lifting equipment or request team assistance when an item exceeds established safe-handling limits.
  • Maintain sufficient close-range visual ability to read specimen labels, confirm identifying information, inspect samples, and complete documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with research participants, coworkers, sponsors, couriers, and laboratory personnel.

Work Environment and Occupational Exposure

This position involves reasonably anticipated occupational exposure to human blood, sharps, and other potentially infectious materials. The employee must follow the organization’s exposure-control plan, universal precautions, sharps-safety procedures, hand-hygiene requirements, and personal protective equipment requirements.

The employee may also work around:

  • Needles, lancets, blood-collection devices, and other sharps.
  • Human blood and other biological specimens.
  • Centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and temperature-monitoring equipment.
  • Laboratory disinfectants and cleaning chemicals.
  • Dry ice, cold packs, insulated shipping containers, and temperature-controlled specimens.
  • Biological specimen packaging and courier shipping materials.
  • Occasional spills, broken specimen containers, or other exposure incidents requiring immediate response under established procedures.

The employee must complete required safety training and use designated personal protective equipment. OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard applies to employees with reasonably anticipated occupational exposure to blood and requires safeguards such as an exposure-control plan, engineering and work-practice controls, training, and recordkeeping.

  • Location: 10040 Regency Circle, Suite 375, Omaha, NE 68114
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. Some weekends
