Position Overview
This role oversees all aspects of indirect tax compliance and strategy related to sales and use tax across North American operations. The position ensures accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and effective collaboration with internal stakeholders and external authorities.
Key Accountabilities
Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Oversee the preparation and review of sales and use tax filings on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, including associated accruals and remittances
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of tax payments and reporting obligations
- Analyze financial results and provide insights into variances related to tax accounts
Accounting & Financial Oversight
- Prepare and review journal entries and account reconciliations tied to indirect tax activity
- Support the integrity of tax-related balances within the general ledger
Audit & Regulatory Management
- Act as the primary contact for state and jurisdictional tax audits, including reverse audits
- Manage audit documentation, responses, and issue resolution
Tax Strategy & Advisory
- Conduct research on tax regulations and interpret implications for the business
- Identify opportunities for tax recovery, savings, and process improvements
- Provide guidance and maintain updated tax policies and procedures for internal teams
Operational Support & Compliance
- Administer exemption certificates, refund claims, and exception handling processes
- Ensure compliance with Canadian indirect taxes, including GST, HST, and PST
- Maintain and optimize tax determination systems and tools
Collaboration & Communication
- Partner with internal finance teams, leadership, and external advisors to resolve tax matters
- Liaise with government agencies and auditors to ensure compliance and efficient issue resolution
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting with a focus on sales and use tax in a corporate environment
- At least 3 years working within a manufacturing or similar operational setting
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative team environment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Willingness and ability to travel occasionally (up to approximately 10%)
Preferred Background
- Exposure to Canadian indirect tax frameworks (GST, HST, PST)
- Experience working with ERP systems, particularly SAP, including reporting functionality
- Familiarity with indirect tax technology solutions, such as Thomson Reuters tax platforms
