Role: Run Orchestra Operations, supporting the Concordia Wind Orchestra, Concordia Symphony Orchestra, Concordia Sinfonietta, Americana Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Concordia Jazz Orchestra. This work encompasses regular weekly office hours and scheduled evening/weekend hours. Also, 1-2 overnight tours per year.
This position operates 10 months per year:
- 11 hours per week: 2 days per week in office for 4 hours (preferably Tuesday/Thursday), plus 3 additional hours for working from home (typically email communications with choir directors and student workers)
- Up to 8 additional hours in the days leading up to any off-campus tour or performance
- Up to 4 additional hours for each final rehearsal at special times outside normal rehearsal schedule (not including rehearsals within 2 hours of the performance)
- Up to 4 additional hours on the day of performances
- Up to 4 additional hours to support 3rd-party events sponsored by the Music Department, as assigned
- Up to 8 hours per day for overnight tours (travel/lodging expenses will be covered by the university); 1-2 per year
Note: All additional hours are assigned at the discretion of the supervisor. In some performance or special rehearsal instances, extra hours will not be assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the below duties satisfactorily:
- Financial Processing: As directed by ensemble directors, handle purchasing and invoice payment for financial org Orchestral Activities and Jazz Activities. Route payments through Chrome River. A university credit card will be provided to support this work.
- Instrumental Sheet Music Library: Manage the instrumental sheet music library. Maintain professional standards of organization and filing.
- Part Preparation, Distribution, and Collection: Prepare parts for distribution to ensemble members and guest musicians. Collect parts, maintaining standards that ensure good care of Concordia's sheet music collection and rental parts (a fine system may be introduced).
- Rehearsal Logistics: Make sure each rehearsal is set up to the specifications of the ensemble director, and that following rehearsal, the rehearsal room is restored to its standard set-up.
- Orchestra Seating Plans: In consultation with ensemble director(s), devise and and draft orchestra seating plans for venues.
- Performance Logistics: Handle all preparatory performance logistics and in-concert operations logistics for choir performances.
- House A/V Performance Logistics: Get trained on basic functions of the CU Center and Zhang Hall A/V system so these can be managed: 1-2 microphones for speaker(s) during the concert, powerpoint or video projection, and basic lighting scenes.
- Travel/Tour Logistics: In co-operation with the Director of Orchestral Activities, organize logistical travel and performance plans for tours.
- Recruitment Communications: Provide monthly updates to prospective choir students about choir happenings and other recruitment initiatives as assigned.
- Social Media: Share content of special interest, including text and image or video (more than box office concert listings) with Community Engagement Manager for possible usage on social media channels. One per event is the standard.
- Student Workers: Recruit and supervise student workers to assist in the execution of the above duties, within the confines of a student worker payroll budget assigned by the Music Office Manager..
- Transportation of Instruments and Equipment: Rent a vehicle as needed and organize the transportation of orchestra equipment and instruments to off-campus venues. Serve as driver as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Resident Performing Artist
- If a position in the orchestra needs to be filled that is an instrument of expertise, this worker might be asked to serve as a resident performing artist as an addition to this position (up to app. 4 hours per week in rehearsal/performance).
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (preferred)
- Experienced in managing workers
- Musical experience (preferred)
- Must possess understanding of the structures and procedures of orchestras
Part Time Staff, Non-Exempt (10 months per year)
$21-22/hr
