Concord University is seeking a skilled Trade Specialist II (HVAC) to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across campus. This position is responsible for the installation, repair, replacement, inspection, and preventative maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration equipment throughout university facilities, including residence halls, academic and administrative buildings, faculty housing, and the President’s residence.
The Trade Specialist II will also maintain and repair ice-making machines, commercial refrigeration systems, and food preparation equipment within the university’s dining facilities. The position plays an important role in maintaining comfortable, functional, and safe environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
This position requires a strong working knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems, the ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues, and a commitment to quality workmanship, safety, and responsive customer service. The successful candidate will work independently and as part of the Facilities team to address routine maintenance needs, emergency repairs, and preventative maintenance throughout campus.
Duties and Responsibilities

Duty/Responsibility
  • The ability to read schematics and troubleshoot circuits at the unit.
  • Repair and maintain electrical H.V.A.C. controls and refrigeration circuits.
  • Maintain steam absorption equipment and provide yearly rebuilding, as well as daily and weekly inspections.
  • Repair and replace refrigeration equipment in the kitchen, walk-in coolers, walk-in freezers, ice machines, reach-in coolers and freezers, and all food preparation equipment.
  • Recover refrigerants and remove old equipment and replace.
  • Operate recovery machines properly.
  • Know and execute E.P.A. rules and regulations in the handling of refrigerants.
  • Replace and repair window air conditioner units.
  • Keep logs and records of recovered refrigerants and refrigerant usage.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex pneumatic and electronic controls such as transducers, receiver controllers, thermostats P.E. switches, etc.
  • Replace split-system air conditioning units, condensing units, air handlers and heat pumps.
  • Maintain and operate feed water pumps, chemicals, and feed water levels in boilers.
  • Repair and maintain heating and cooling systems in the President’s House, Witherspoon faculty housing, Mill Street Apartments, and all other buildings on campus.
  • Repair and maintain steam boilers as well as hot water boilers.

  • Perform repairs of electrical, plumbing, heating and carpentry as the situation requires.
  • Use various construction methods and practices as required to perform essential tasks related to maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.

  • Operate utilities Energy Management System to monitor and maintain building environments on campus and back up capacity.
  • Maintenance and upkeep of campus generators, kitchen dish belt and bread proofers.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Maintain air handlers, exhaust systems, (Balance air hoods, exhaust fans, and dampers) replacing filters, cleaning and repair coils, changing belts etc., as required.
  • Install and maintain building control systems using both pneumatic and electrical equipment.
  • Install and maintain cooling towers, consisting of water treatment, cleaning, repairing and inspection for proper operation.
  • Interpret blueprints and specifications for HC/AC/R equipment to ensure proper installation and operation.
  • Prepare requisition for parts, supplies, etc., from supply rooms and tool crib to ensure proper installation.
  • Operate heavy equipment as assigned.
  • Install and maintain heating exchangers, hot and chilled water treatments.
  • Welding as assigned by supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Knowledge

Minimum Education
Business/Technical/Vocational School

Required Licenses/Certification
  • Must hold required certification in H.V.A.C. (Required by state law) and renewed annually.
  • Universal Refrigeration certification – required by federal law.
  • OSHA 10 hour certification – institutional requirement.
  • 410A Licensure – Institutional requirement.
  • EPA Section 608 certification
  • Certificate Training required under 609 for proper use of motor vehicle A.C. – institutional requirement.

Required Skills
  • Knowledge and skilled in the areas of steam technology, refrigeration pneumatics, and energy management technology.
  • All phases of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HV/AC/R.
  • Knowledge of materials such as asbestos, bromide, CFC’s, and water treatment chemicals for HV/AC/R equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, equipment installation and controls (electrical and pneumatic).
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, ladders, scaffolds, and other equipment required for the position.
  • Ability to work effectively with maintenance and Facilities personnel and respond to routine and emergency maintenance needs.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures, elevated noise levels, poor lighting, limited ventilation, confined spaces, and other challenging work environments.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including walking, stooping, crouching, climbing, reaching, and working from ladders and scaffolds.
