Senior Network Engineer (RF Mesh & Utility Networks)
Location: Houston, TX (3 days a week onsite)
Job Description:
We are looking for a Senior Network Engineer to design, implement, monitor, and troubleshoot RF mesh networks connecting systemwide smart meters to the ITRON application platform. This role requires deep handson expertise in network operations, incident resolution, and optimization across utility and enterprise network environments. The ideal candidate brings strong networking fundamentals, experience in wireless and utility communications, and the ability to operate effectively in missioncritical infrastructure environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead support and troubleshooting of RF mesh network connectivity between smart meters and ITRON systems
- Design, deploy, and maintain wired, wireless, and cellular network solutions supporting utility operations
- Perform advanced configuration, troubleshooting, and optimization of routers, switches, and wireless infrastructure.
- Monitor network performance and identify issues using tools such as SolarWinds, Wireshark, and Nessus.
- Participate in the installation, maintenance, and optimization of network hardware and communication links.
- Execute firmware updates and configuration changes under established procedures.
- Support network documentation, change management, and operational best practices.
- Use basic automation scripts (Python, PowerShell, or Bash) to assist with monitoring and reporting tasks.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior and midlevel network engineers as needed.
Required Skills & Experience:
- 5 years of handson experience in network operations or engineering support.
- Strong Understanding of network fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, and routing concepts.
- Working knowledge of RF mesh networking and wireless communication technologies.
- Proven experience supporting routers, switches, and enterpriseclass network monitoring tools.
- Familiarity with packet capture and troubleshooting tools.
- Ability to work in missioncritical environments such as utilities, substations, or data centers.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred (NicetoHave):
- Experience with SoftwareDefined Networking (SDN) or Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI).
- Understanding of Electric Utility operations and smart grid environments.
- Experience working in NERC CIPregulated environments.
- Experience with Aruba wired and wireless networking technologies.
