Role Overview
The Failure Analysis Engineer serves as the technical authority for system-level failure analysis and product reliability across the full manufacturing lifecycle — from New Product Introduction (NPI) through High Volume Manufacturing (HVM).
This role leads the investigation of complex failure mechanisms, defines structured root cause methodologies, and drives cross-functional resolution efforts to improve product quality, yield, and long-term reliability.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in server hardware architectures, failure physics, and data-driven analysis, combined with the ability to influence engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams in a fast-paced environment.
What You’ll Own:
End-to-End Failure Analysis Strategy Across:
- NPI (DVT / PVT readiness)
- Production (L6, L10, system-level)
- Field / customer returns (RMA, DOA)
System-Level Scope:
- CPU
- Memory
- Storage
- Power
- Networking
- Thermal systems
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Test Engineering
- Product Engineering
- PQE / MQE
- Supplier Engineering
- Manufacturing Operations
Key Responsibilities
- Lead complex failure analysis (RCA) and identify system-level failure mechanisms across server platforms
- Define and standardize FA methodologies, tools, and best practices
- Drive reliability strategy and influence NPI readiness (DFR, DFT, test coverage)
- Establish failure trend analysis for yield, escapes, and field returns to enable data-driven decisions
- Act as escalation point for critical quality issues and lead cross-functional problem solving
- Drive corrective actions across design, test, and manufacturing to eliminate repeat failures
- Improve test effectiveness, reduce NTF loops, and strengthen engineering feedback mechanisms
- Mentor engineers and elevate overall failure analysis capability across the organization
Required Qualifications
- Deep knowledge of server hardware architectures including CPU, memory, storage, power, and networking
- Strong expertise in failure analysis methodologies and root cause techniques
- Experience with system-level debug including electrical, firmware, and integration issues
- Strong statistical analysis and data interpretation capability
- Understanding of manufacturing test flows (L6, L10, system-level)
- Experience with:
- Oscilloscopes
- Logic analyzers
- Diagnostic tools
- Python, SQL, Power BI, or equivalent analytics tools
Preferred Qualifications
- GPU systems and liquid cooling experience
- Hyperscale manufacturing experience
- Automation exposure
- Six Sigma certification
- Reliability modeling knowledge (Weibull, MTBF, HALT/HASS)
- Exposure to DFX methodologies (DFR, DFT, DFM)
- Automation of FA workflows and data pipelines
- Experience working with suppliers and component-level FA
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- 10 years of experience in Failure Analysis, Reliability Engineering, or System Debug
- Proven success supporting NPI to HVM transitions in complex hardware systems
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex, cross-domain technical problems
What Success Looks Like (First 6 Months)
- Establish structured FA framework and RCA methodologies across programs
- Identify top systemic failure drivers and implement corrective actions
- Improve failure containment and reduce repeat issues / NTF rates
- Build strong cross-functional alignment with Test, Quality, and Product teams
- Enable data-driven visibility into failure trends and reliability risks
