What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Development Leaders Before or After School position at Community Education?

Objective:

The Youth Development Leader supports the Site Supervisor and Assistant Site Supervisor in ensuring the successful daily operation of high-quality, licensed before- and after-school programming at all Community Education sites. This role fosters a safe, engaging, and enriching environment where students can learn, grow, and thrive while maintaining compliance with state childcare regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

Child Supervision & Safety

  • Collaborate with the Site Supervisor to actively monitor and supervise children, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment.
  • Maintain appropriate child-to-staff ratios as required by state licensing regulations.
  • Implement positive behavior reinforcement strategies and follow established behavior management guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate count of children in assigned group.
  • Ensure students remain engaged and actively participate in program activities.
  • Follow all health, safety, and emergency procedures, including reporting injuries or incidents promptly.

Program Implementation & Engagement

  • Lead, assist, and participate in activities that promote creativity, teamwork, and personal growth.
  • Encourage and motivate students to participate enthusiastically in all programs, field trips, and special events.
  • Adapt to new situations, unexpected changes, or challenges with flexibility and problem-solving skills.
  • Stay with the assigned group at all times unless otherwise directed by a supervisor.

Communication & Conflict Resolution

  • Maintain open and professional communication with the Site Supervisor, Assistant Director, and School-Age Programs Coordinator to address and resolve conflicts or concerns.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, families, and fellow staff members to create a welcoming program environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all sensitive and personal information.

Policy & Professional Development

  • Follow all program policies, procedures, and state licensing regulations for before- and after-school care.
  • Complete required annual training hours in accordance with child care licensing requirements.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students, demonstrating leadership, responsibility, and professionalism.

Other Duties:

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Director, School-Age Programs Coordinator, or Executive Director of Community Education.

Minimum Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in education, child development, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with children in a licensed child care, school, or recreational setting preferred.

Licensing & Certification Requirements:

  • Must meet all state requirements for working in a licensed child care program.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before the start date).
  • Completion of state-mandated background checks, including fingerprinting and TB testing.
  • Must complete required training hours as mandated by state licensing guidelines.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage a group of students in a structured and engaging manner.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with supervisors, colleagues, and families.

Work Schedule:

  • Part-time, before and/or after school hours.
  • Availability for occasional meetings and training sessions as required.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $11.50 - $13.70 per hour
