POSITION OVERVIEW:
Reports to the Chief Operations Officer. The Director, Accounting and Finance is a full time position
located in the CIS of Michigan Lansing office. The Director, Accounting and Finance has the responsibility
for the implementation and monitoring of financial, accounting, insurance, and audit functions of the
organization. The Director, Accounting and Finance advises the Board of Directors and department
heads on business functions of the organization and the sustainability of these functions. They work
with others to ensure these functions are carried out in a consistent and legal manner based upon
organizational policies and the General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) .

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Expert in accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct and Martus systems are used by CISM)
- 2 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
- Experience with pass through funding
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
- Exceptional organizational skills; ability to maintain composure in a busy environment
- Demonstrated effectiveness in written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial reporting tools.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong relationship building skills
- Experience with single source and grant audits
- Experience reconciling bank accounts and processing financial transactions
- Experience with Journal entries
- Able to pass a background check and credit check
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee budgeting, general ledger and accounting functions and systems, ensuring
compliance with appropriate GAAP and Non-Profit standards and regulatory
requirements while maintaining accurate financial accounts.
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring timely payments and
deposits.
- Record donations, grants, and other income, ensuring proper classification and tracking.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit card statements, and other expenses monthly.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date general ledger entries.
- Prepare and post journal entries as directed and needed.
- Manage the month end closing process and ensure all balance sheet accounts are
reconciled monthly in a timely manner.
- Prepare, analyze and submit monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports to senior
management, the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
- Work closely with the board of directors and finance committee, providing financial
insights and recommendations at board meetings.
- Monitor cash flow and liquidity, making recommendations to ensure the organization
has adequate funds for operational needs.
- Establish and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard the organization's assets
and ensure the accuracy of financial records.
- Work with the Chief Program Officer to ensure School District Contracts are accurately
reflected in the budget and invoicing system.
- Work collaboratively with the Development Team to accurately record grants and
donations, ensuring compliance with donor requirements.
- Coordinate with the HR team to ensure all payroll, tax and benefit transactions are
properly captured and recorded in compliance with federal, state and local
requirements.
- Along with the Grantee (point CISM person for grant), oversee the maintenance of the
grant accounting system. Ensure accurate product standards are developed and
maintained.
- Collaborate with staff to update financial policies and procedures to ensure
transparency, accountability, and compliance.
- Identify and assess financial risks, and develop strategies to mitigate them.
- Manage the coordination and completeness of the annual financial audit and
corresponding CIS annual reports (financial data only).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to travel throughout Michigan
- Must have reliable personal transportation and a valid driver’s license
- Consistent attendance - must work from CIS office headquarters at least three days a
week
- Ability to sit/stand at a computer for an extended period of time
