Purpose

Assists with the daily operation of week long summer day camps for children ages 6 - 13, dealing with various themes such as outdoor recreation, outdoor education, environmental interpretation, nature discovery, outdoor primitive skills, etc.


Examples of Duties

Assists with the daily operation of week long summer day camp programs for 15-40 children designed to provide quality outdoor activities that promote environmental awareness, appreciation, and familiarity with natural settings.

Directs activities of campers, serving as their counselor and leader; involves all members of the group in activities; promotes spirit and enthusiasm throughout the nature day camp experience.

Provides leadership in one or more program activities ensuring a high quality program; assists with and participates in camp-wide activities as required.

Participates in staff meetings and trainings.

Guides and directs assigned campers in a variety of camp activities; increases campers' understanding of the environment; sets a good example for campers, and encourages respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.

Ensures the safety of campers at all times; keeps camp areas clean, and demonstrates a concern for the environment.

Adheres to all applicable laws, policies and procedures.

Maintains good working relationships with employees, the public, parents or guardians of campers and campers in assigned group.

May assist with the implementation and operation of additional program opportunities for day, overnight, and weekend camp programs, focusing on youth and families.

Performs special projects and related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:High School graduate; interest in working with children; experience working in other camps, recreation, or environmental education preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, public relations, and organizational and planning skills.

Team-Oriented:Outstanding customer service, communications, and interpersonal skills are a must as frequent interaction with park-wide staff is required. A flexible and results-oriented disposition is necessary. Adapting to changing priorities, often under time constraints and with little prior training, will be part of the job.

Attendance:Being present at the designated camp location is an essential function and is required as part of a 40-hour work week.

Language Skills:Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with coworkers, supervisors, children, parents, the general public; ability to prepare meaningful, concise, and accurate reports; ability to give presentations.

Mathematical Skills:Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Reasoning Ability:Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Licenses, Registrations: Possession of a valid Ohio driver license, insurable by the Park District's insurance carrier, and ability to conform to the driving standards policy as approved by the Board of Park Commissioners.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, talk and hear, work with hands, lift, hike, drive park vehicles, off-road vehicles, etc. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms, etc.

Work Environment:While performing the regular duties of this job, the employee regularly works outside in all weather conditions.

Work Schedule: Hours are dependent on assigned camps. Hours are up to 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, during camp season (June to August) with occasional overtime.

Additional Information:Knowledge of natural resources and environmental interpretation, public relations and safety practices and procedures. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships within work unit, with coworkers, other professionals, and the general public. Candidate must satisfactorily complete a background investigation.
