PURPOSE
AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination
The .50 AVID Coordinator position, housed at John Warner Middle School, is responsible for implementing the AVID College Readiness System with fidelity, supporting the AVID elective and schoolwide implementation. In addition, the .50 AVID Tutor Supervisor position will be responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervising of AVID tutors throughout the district.
Why This Role
Columbia Public Schools has been an AVID district for more than a decade, with 11 AVID sites serving students across three high schools, seven middle schools, and one elementary school. This position carries significant impact: the AVID Coordinator shapes schoolwide culture and college readiness at JWMS, while the Tutor Supervisor builds the tutor workforce that powers AVID Elective tutorials across the district. The selected candidate will receive a thorough transition from the outgoing coordinator, onboarding support from the District AVID Coordinator, attendance at AVID Summer Institute, and membership in a statewide and national network of AVID professionals.
What Success Looks Like in Year One
- Every AVID Elective section across the district is fully tutor-staffed by early October
- An active, participatory JWMS AVID site team meets regularly with documented evidence supporting certification
- A sustainable tutor recruitment pipeline is established with at least three higher education partners
- Tutors across all secondary buildings receive consistent training, supervision, and feedback aligned to the AVID tutorial process
- Strong working relationships are built with AVID Coordinators, Elective teachers, and building Principals across all 10 secondary sites
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
For AVID Coordinator:
- Advocates strongly for and is committed to the philosophy of AVID, including support for equity and access for all students to advanced classes
- Leads an active, participatory AVID site team
- Serves as the liaison among the site team, principal, and AVID district coordinator
- Serves as the liaison among the principal, AVID counselor, and AVID teachers
- Directs certification and data collection, including engaging the members of the site team in the collection of evidence and providing data
- Collaborates across school buildings and grade levels to articulate the curriculum and activities of AVID
- Delivers professional learning on AVID methodologies for other staff members of the school and the district
For AVID Tutor Supervisor:
AVID Tutor Recruitment & Hiring
- Recruits AVID tutors within the community, including through relationships with Higher Ed colleagues
- Attends hiring fairs on college campuses to promote the AVID College Readiness System and employment opportunities for college students
- Reviews applicants in Talent Ed and schedules interviews with applicants
- Partners with Human Resources personnel throughout the hiring process, including regular check-ins on hires' status with HR process
- Assigns tutors to buildings based on availability and building needs
- Supports tutors throughout HR onboarding, including regular communication via email, text, and phone calls
- Collaborates with AVID Building Coordinators and AVID Elective teachers to determine the specific number of tutors needed
- Attends AVID Summer Institute (or alternative professional learning) in July 2026 — strand to be determined by District AVID Coordinator
- Leverages social media to promote AVID tutor employment opportunities
AVID Tutor Supervision
- Conducts regular walkthroughs during AVID Elective tutorials to monitor tutor performance
- Troubleshoots performance concerns with AVID Coordinators and Elective teachers
- Provides ongoing professional development to tutors as it relates to their roles in the AVID Elective classroom communities
- Oversees the AVID tutor evaluation process across buildings
- Supports AVID Elective teachers and Coordinators in maximizing tutor staffing while honoring the district AVID budget
- Directs AVID tutor training, including tutorial instruction and HR-mandated CPS training
AVID System Ambassador
- Builds relationships and provides support for all stakeholders
- Travels between 10 AVID Secondary buildings, Higher Ed institutions, and the district board office
- Maintains a district-wide perspective on implementation of the AVID Elective, AVID Schoolwide, and AVID Districtwide
- Advocates for the AVID College Readiness System in Columbia Public Schools
- Demonstrates proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace
- Communicates effectively via email, text, and phone
- Models organization of time and materials
- Meets regularly with the AVID District Coordinator

Supervises: AVID Tutors
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree; Missouri teaching certificate in any area.
Preferred: Master's degree; prior experience in supervising and evaluating staff; prior experience in a hiring process; experience coaching adults; experience coordinating work across multiple sites or buildings; familiarity with WICOR methodologies; comfort building relationships with higher education partners.
Ideal Candidate: Prior experience with the AVID College Readiness System.
