**Primary Work Location: Elizabeth City Campus. Occasional travel to the Dare Campus may be required based on operational needs.**
Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
Hours: Up to 25 hours per week; schedule may vary based on instructional and program needs.


The Part-Time Welding Lab Assistant provides operational and instructional support for the Welding Technology program by assisting faculty with laboratory activities, equipment preparation, and maintenance of a safe learning environment. The position supports student learning by ensuring welding laboratories are properly prepared, maintained, and supplied while promoting compliance with College safety procedures.

The Part-Time Welding Lab Assistant works under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator, Welding Technologies.

Examples of Duties

Laboratory Support

  • Assist faculty during welding laboratory instruction.
  • Prepare laboratory workstations, tools, equipment, and materials for scheduled classes.
  • Assist students with proper equipment setup and safe operation under faculty supervision.
  • Monitor laboratory activities and report safety concerns to the instructor.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.
  • Clean and store welding equipment following laboratory activities.
  • Assist with routine maintenance and inspection of welding equipment and tools.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of welding supplies, consumables, and equipment.
  • Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment.
  • Follow all OSHA, College, and welding laboratory safety procedures.
  • Assist with opening and closing laboratory facilities as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of documented welding experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic welding equipment and shop safety practices.
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial laboratory environment.
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and interact effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
Preferred
  • Welding certificate or diploma from an accredited college, technical school, or trade school.
  • Two (2) years of documented industrial welding experience.
  • Prior experience supporting welding instruction or training programs.
  • Experience working in an educational environment.

  • Knowledge of welding equipment, tools, materials, and shop practices.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and welding safety standards.
  • Ability to maintain a safe laboratory environment.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to organize materials and maintain laboratory inventory.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer skills sufficient to perform assigned duties.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Work is performed primarily in a welding laboratory environment with exposure to heat, welding fumes, noise, dust, sparks, and moving equipment. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times.

The position requires the ability to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, and reach frequently.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity sufficient to operate welding equipment and hand tools.
  • Work safely around industrial equipment while following established safety procedures.
