This position is location at Pasquotank Correctional Facility in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. This is a part-time position.

Classification Description
The College and Career Readiness (CCR) Instructor – Pasquotank Correctional Institution (PCI) provides High School Equivalency (HSE) instruction to incarcerated adult learners while supporting student success through assessment, academic advising, instructional planning, and compliance with North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) Adult Education requirements. The instructor develops and delivers engaging instruction, maintains required student records, monitors academic progress, and collaborates with correctional institution staff and College personnel to support student achievement and program success.
The CCR Instructor reports to the Director, College and Career Readiness.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesInstruction and Student Learning (45%)

  • Provide instruction in High School Equivalency (HSE) and basic skills courses using effective adult learning principles and instructional strategies.
  • Develop lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards, student learning objectives, and program requirements.
  • Assess student learning and provide timely feedback to promote academic success.
  • Evaluate student performance and adjust instructional methods to address individual learning needs.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and engaging learning environment while adhering to correctional facility policies and procedures.
Student Advising and Success (20%)
  • Meet with new students to explain program requirements, assessment results, educational pathways, and academic expectations.
  • Assist students in establishing educational goals and developing individualized plans for completion.
  • Monitor student attendance, academic progress, and participation, providing guidance and encouragement to support persistence and successful completion.
  • Identify students experiencing academic or attendance challenges and implement appropriate interventions consistent with College and correctional institution procedures.
  • Encourage student participation and promote available educational resources that support academic achievement.
Program Administration and Compliance (20%)
  • Administer required assessments in accordance with NCCCS Adult Education guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records of assessments, attendance, educational functioning level (EFL) gains, instructional hours, and student progress using the Literacy Education Information System (LEIS) and other required systems.
  • Ensure student records remain complete, accurate, confidential, and compliant with federal, state, College, and NCCCS requirements.
  • Monitor assessment schedules and identify appropriate opportunities for post-testing and measurable skill gain documentation.
  • Prepare and maintain required reports and documentation supporting program compliance, audits, and state reporting requirements.
Program Operations and Collaboration (10%)
  • Enroll and reactivate students within approved student information systems.
  • Create and maintain student user accounts and provide orientation to instructional technologies and program expectations.
  • Collaborate with CCR instructors, College staff, correctional institution personnel, and other stakeholders to support student success and program operations.
  • Participate in department meetings and assist with continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Recommend instructional materials, curriculum enhancements, and program improvements to support student outcomes.
Professional Development (5%)
  • Participate in required North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), College, and departmental professional development activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of adult education instructional practices, assessment requirements, technology, and applicable regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Education or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of teaching or instructional experience in adult education, secondary education, workforce development, or a related educational setting.
  • Experience using instructional technology, student information systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to maintain accurate educational records and comply with applicable reporting requirements.
Preferred
  • Experience teaching High School Equivalency (HSE), Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult Secondary Education (ASE), or English Language Acquisition programs.
  • Experience working within a correctional education environment.
  • Experience with NCCCS Adult Education accountability requirements.
  • Experience utilizing LEIS, CASAS, TABE, or similar assessment and student management systems.

Knowledge of:

  • Adult education principles and instructional methodologies.
  • High School Equivalency curriculum and instructional practices.
  • North Carolina Community College System Adult Education policies and accountability requirements.
  • Student assessment and educational progress monitoring.
  • Student information systems and educational technology.
  • Microsoft Office Suite and standard office software.
Ability to:
  • Deliver engaging instruction to diverse adult learners.
  • Develop lesson plans and assess student learning outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare required reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, correctional institution personnel, and community partners.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Exercise sound judgment while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.
  • Adapt to changing instructional, operational, and regulatory requirements.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed primarily within a correctional institution classroom environment.
  • Frequent use of computers and instructional technology.
  • Frequent standing, walking, speaking, and classroom instruction.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying of instructional materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Position requires compliance with all College and correctional institution security policies, procedures, and background screening requirements.
  • Occasional travel to College campuses or other instructional locations for meetings or training may be required.
