Job Summary:
CMC Phoenix is seeking a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to lead our Nursing team at our newly acquired acute care hospital. The CNO will set departmental goals, standards, policies, and procedures; structure the department to meet legal, organizational, and medical staff requirements; and collaborate with the executive council on the hospital’s strategic plan.
This role will oversee acute care nursing operations and quality, develop and manage the nursing budget, and advise administration on procedural changes impacting patient care. The CNO will ensure compliance with standards of nursing practice to drive safe, high-quality outcomes.
The CNO will also be responsible for CEU, Staff Development, Infection Control, and Psychiatric Emergency Services Clinicians.
Qualifications:
Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors, including but not limited to relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for CMC Phoenix roles, including but not limited to shift differential and other special pay practices. The posted compensation for the position is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay that CMC Phoenix in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting.

Qualifications:
- Active, Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Arizona
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing required; master’s degree in nursing or a related field preferred
- Minimum of five (5) years’ management/administrative experience in an acute care hospital; psychiatric nursing background preferred
- Demonstrated acute care clinical experience (e.g., ED, ICU, medical-surgical, telemetry, or inpatient psychiatric units), including management of high-acuity patients and rapid clinical decision-making
- Current CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers certification at time of hire
- CPI certification required within 30 days of employment
- Prior experience overseeing Psychiatric Emergency Teams preferred
- Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card required
- Staff Development & Quality of Care
- Oversees staff development and continuing education (including orientation and professional advancement).
- Continuously evaluates and improves patient care quality; reports key issues and outcomes to Administration.
- Recommends changes to nursing and administrative policies to ensure safe, efficient patient care.
- Assesses and recommends new or modified facilities/equipment to support high-quality care.
- Provides Acute Care clinical oversight to ensure evidence-based practice standards and consistent care across units.
- Monitors Acute Care quality and safety indicators (e.g., falls, HAPI, infection prevention, sepsis response, medication safety) and leads improvement actions as needed.
- Supports Acute Care regulatory/accreditation readiness and ongoing compliance with applicable standards.
- Collaboration, Communication & Community Relations
- Leads and participates in problem-solving and policy development for Nursing Services.
- Coordinates closely with all departments to ensure continuity and collaboration of services.
- Maintains positive relationships with patients, families, clergy, community groups, and partner agencies.
- Communicates and represents Nursing Services’ goals to the community and external stakeholders.
- Collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to optimize Acute Care patient flow (admissions, transfers, discharges) and continuity of care.
- Promotes effective Acute Care communication and escalation processes (e.g., handoff standards, critical results reporting, rapid response activation).
- Partners with community providers and post-acute agencies to strengthen Acute Care transitions and reduce avoidable readmissions.
- Leadership & Governance Participation
- Serves on Professional Staff Committees related to patient care.
- Participates in policy decisions affecting Nursing Services.
- Attends and contributes to Senior Management, Board of Directors, and Medical Staff department meetings.
- Provides leadership for Acute Care operational planning, including staffing models, surge planning, and resource allocation.
- Participates in Acute Care performance improvement, risk management reviews, and RCA/sentinel event processes as applicable.
- Contributes to strategic planning for Acute Care services, including program development and evaluation of new technology/equipment.
