Nature of Work

Under limited supervision performs work of moderate to considerable difficulty in mechanical, electrical and welding/fabricating in the maintenance and repair of all types of automotive, specialized vehicles, and road maintenance equipment; performs related work as assigned.

Please Note:

The hiring range for this position is determined by qualifications.

Level III: $56,009.20 to $58,809.66

Level IV: $60,268.21 to $63,281.62

Typical Duties

LEVEL III - HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Performs the duties of Level I and Level II
  • Performs maintenance tasks in Light and Heavy-Duty Equipment mechanical systems requiring advanced mechanical knowledge and skill, including repairs on major mechanical systems such as engine, transmission, power train, hydraulic, brake, steering and suspension systems and their components
  • Performs diagnoses and major repairs on Heavy Equipment systems that require more advanced mechanical knowledge and skill including repairs on major systems and components
  • Performs emergency road repair/service to trucks and heavy road maintenance equipment outside of the maintenance facilities
  • Performs proficient fabrication and electric welding as required
  • Understands Federal Motor Carrier Safety regulations (FMCS)
  • Understands and follows safe working practices in a variety of work environments
  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs
  • Responds to emergency situations
  • Requires working various 12-hour snow shifts
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances

LEVEL IV HEAVY EQUIPMENT SENIOR MECHANIC

TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Performs the duties of Level I through Level III
  • Performs maintenance tasks in Light and Heavy-Duty Equipment systems requiring expert mechanical knowledge and skill, including repairs on major mechanical systems such as engine, transmission, power train, hydraulic, brake, steering and suspension systems and their components
  • Diagnoses and completes major repairs on Heavy Equipment systems that require expert mechanical knowledge and skill including repairs on major systems and its components
  • Performs emergency road repair/service to trucks and heavy road maintenance equipment outside of the maintenance facilities.
  • Performs proficient fabrication and welding as required
  • Serve as a lead worker over all other mechanics
  • Provides maintenance-related training to all other mechanics
  • May provide input with respect to training and performance evaluations of mechanics
  • Understands Federal Motor Carrier Safety regulations (FMCS)
  • Understands and follow safe working practices in a variety of work environments
  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs
  • Responds to emergency situations
  • Requires working various 12-hour snow shifts
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances

Essential functions of this position include but not limited to driving; walking, reaching and twisting to access work; climbing on vehicle to work; working with and around other co-workers; vision acuity (near) for wiring; communicating with supervisors and co-workers; finger dexterity for component assembly and operation of tools. Environmental conditions include but not limited to noise from grinders, tools, compressor, etc; hazards (mechanical) from wheel mounting, truck parts, etc; atmospheric conditions (dust) from dirt and cinders. Must be able to lift 60lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

LEVEL III - HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma/GED and four (4) years of heavy-duty truck and/or road maintenance equipment maintenance and repair experience; OR any equivalent combination of accredited education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a valid driver’s license; if hired from out of state, must obtain an Arizona driver's license within 30 calendar days of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.

Must obtain a valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver's License within one year of hire and maintain throughout employment. Must have completed required trainings per department training plan. Must have completed and maintained two Supervisor and Fleet Manager approved ASE Certification within six months of hire. Must have and maintain own tools applicable to this level of mechanical work.

LEVEL IV HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC, SENIOR

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Six years of mechanical and/or welding/fabrication experience; OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates High School Diploma/GED and 6) years of heavy-duty truck and/or road maintenance equipment maintenance and repair experience; OR any equivalent combination of accredited education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a valid driver’s license; if hired from out of state, must obtain an Arizona driver's license within 30 calendar days of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.

All positions are non-exempt from overtime.

All positions are safety sensitive.

TOOL ALLOWANCE: $1,000 annual

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES EXCELLENCE (ASE) Certification Incentive Program –

applicable to Mechanic Level II through Level IV

  • Certifications T1 through T8
  • Requires the approval of Supervisor and Fleet Manager
  • ASE Certification testing fees are the responsibility of the employee.
  • Reimbursement of testing fee(s) provided with documentation of passing/certification
  • Earn $.20 per hour wage increase for every ASE Certification completed (T1 through T8)
  • Earn additional $.40 per hour as a one-time wage increase for completing every four ASE Certifications
  • Certification must be maintained if certification is lost hourly rate will be reduced

Preferred Qualifications: Additional consideration will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in: Motor grader repair and maintenance, Wheel loader repair and maintenance, Ten-wheel truck repair and maintenance, Track-type tractor repair and maintenance.

The Ideal Candidate is a highly skilled heavy equipment mechanic with advanced diagnostic ability and a strong sense of ownership over fleet reliability. This person has deep experience working on a wide range of heavy-duty equipment, including diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and computerized controls. They can troubleshoot complex issues with limited direction and make sound repair decisions that balance cost, safety, and uptime. They take pride in quality work, keep accurate records, and follow preventive maintenance standards without cutting corners.

This candidate works well in a team but does not need constant supervision. They are dependable, communicate clearly, and support the development of junior staff by sharing knowledge and setting a strong example in the shop.

  • Methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in commercial and heavy equipment vehicles and heavy equipment repair and maintenance
  • Diagnosing mechanical, electrical and computerized problems and performing repairs
  • Safety practices and procedures

  • Paint and body work
  • Mechanical design and fabrication
  • Electrical systems, including computerized induction/ignition systems
  • Mobile air conditioning systems
  • Vehicle and equipment tire repair
  • Equipment recovery and transportation techniques
  • Overhead and mobile crane operation
  • Tie-down, rigging, and lifting operation
  • Basic machine shop tools and measuring devices
  • Two-way and wireless communication
  • Air and hydraulic systems

  • Use of power and hand tools
  • Use of diagnostic equipment

  • Operation of vehicles and equipment for diagnostic purposes

  • Work varying shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • Diagnose problems and make repairs in the field on a 24-hour basis
  • Effectively handle lifting of various objects weighing up to 60 pounds
  • Work extended hours out of doors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports
  • Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public
  • Follow written and verbal instructions, including manufacturers' service specifications
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
