Nature of Work
The Coconino County School Superintendent’s Office is seeking an experienced Chief Deputy – Finance & Operations to lead financial services for 8 school districts. This leadership role oversees school finance, payroll/warrants, budgeting, and school district election support while guiding a collaborative team.
Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty managing the financial operations within the office of the Superintendent of Schools; performs related work as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have a Masters degree in Business Administration, have extensive experience in school finance and accounting, experience supervising staff, as well as relative experience working and communicating with Board Members, Elected Officials, Council Members, and Community Partners. The ideal candidate will also have an understanding of leadership, management, administration, diplomacy, professionalism, team work, advocacy, public relations, and organizational development, and legislative experience.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or related field and five years of increasingly responsible experience in public-sector financial management, including three years of experience in school finance/budgeting and fiscal management practices applicable to entitlement and grant-funded programs; OR
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
This position is exempt from overtime.
Note: Individuals in exempt classifications as part time employees may be classified as non-exempt per FLSA law regarding minimum weekly salary requirements.
This position is safety sensitive.
This position is at-will.
Preferred Qualifications: Masters degree in Business Administration or Accounting; experience in public sector and/or school accounting and finance; budget experience; supervisory experience.

Typical Duties

- Participates with the County Superintendent of Schools to determine the financial goals, objectives and operational priorities of the Superintendent of Schools Department as well as the Accommodation School District
- Develops, monitors, and manages the budgets for the County Superintendent of Schools Department
- Plans, directs, and coordinates the administrative, accounting, and financial management functions
- Participates in contract negotiations
- Provides accounting oversight for a variety of educational programs
- Hires, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines staff
- Acts as department liaison with school district business managers and financial software providers
- Assists with the selection, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of systems used in departmental functions
- Determines the tax levy needs of each school district annually
- Oversees and completes Override and Bond Pamphlets for School Districts' Elections
- Advises school board members, administrators, and the Superintendent of Schools on financial management issues
- Prepares and maintains financial records and reports
- Acts as the Superintendent of Schools in that person's absence

- Principles and practices of school finance and school district budgetary management

- Legal and business grammar and usage
- Applications of computer and data processing systems for word processing, records management, and information storage and retrieval
- Governmental accounting procedures
- Principles and practices of public administration
- The use of computers and standard office equipment
- Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County Manager, Board members, elected and appointed officials, employees, other agencies, and the public
- Follow written and verbal instructions
