SUMMARY
The Behavior Mental Health Specialist will provide behavior/mental health support to students within Clinton County local school districts. The Behavior Mental Health Specialist performs a variety of tasks necessary to support educators, students, and families to improve overall mental health attendance, reduce behavioral incidents, and increase family engagement. The Behavior Mental Health Specialist will provide brief therapy to youth with mild to moderate mental health concerns within the district in individual and/or small group sessions. Additionally, they will assist in the collection and analysis of behavioral data, participate in data analysis meetings with building teams, and provide referrals to outside resources, when necessary. The Behavior Mental Health Specialist will support the implementation of school-wide systems that promote whole child outcomes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work collaboratively across assigned schools with staff and administrators to build capacity for data collection, problem solving and data-driven instructional decision making processes that support implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) across core instruction, strategic and intensive intervention and assessment practices to positively impact student growth and achievement.
- Administer behavioral health assessment for referred students, using validated screening and assessment tools and develop resources for data collection, observation protocols and documentation systems.
- Develop treatment service plans for students, with input from school staff, the student, and parents/caregivers as appropriate.
- Provide behavioral health interventions and/or counseling services to students to enhance the psychological, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social factors important for the prevention, treatment, or management of behavioral health concerns.
- Assess the effectiveness of the delivered services toward achieving the student driven goals and objectives via treatment service/behavior intervention plan review.
- Identify and communicate barriers to implementation of successful mental health supports in schools with administrators and staff.
- Meet several times a year with the school principal and other key staff to review resources and determine referrals needed for individual students to human services, mental health services, behavioral intervention services, and youth development resources outside of the school.
- Provide consultation to administrators and staff with identification, recruitment, and connections to local resources in addressing the behavioral and mental health needs of students.
- Support comprehensive school-wide systems such as PBIS and MTSS to promote positive outcomes for the whole child. QUALIFICATIONS Education:
Possession of a Master’s Degree in Social Work
Experience:
Preferred but not required: Three (3) or more years of experience within a human service, behavioral health, mental health, or other related field. Three (3) or more years of supporting student mental health needs, facilitating behavioral data collection, planning, and conducting professional development.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Licensed Masters Social Worker Degree (LMSW) or Limited Licensed Masters Social Worker Degree (LLMSW) in Michigan - Required
Michigan Department of Education approval as a School Social Worker OR MDE School Social Work Certificate - Preferred
Other knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge and experience in the application of methods and processes for behavioral intervention and mental health supports.
Knowledge and experience with implementation of nonviolent crisis intervention, advanced de-escalation practices, conflict resolution, and social skills development. Knowledge and experience with implementing positive behavior supports, classroom management strategies, and individual student strategies e.g. communication supports, other accommodations and modifications as appropriate.
- Demonstrated skills with use of technology to implement work responsibilities.
- Demonstrated ability and experience with development and implementation of intervention programs for youth with challenging behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health issues within school settings.
- Demonstrated ability to work with youth exhibiting mild to moderate mental health issues.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive and effective coaching and consultative relationships with administrators, staff, parents, community partners and youth.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences both orally and in writing.
- Basic knowledge of child development and behavioral health.
- Demonstrates extensive knowledge and implementation of community resources.
- Ability to maintain emotional control under stressful situations.
- Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality in dealing with all stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and within teams to accomplish identified goals and strategies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
- Occasionally positions self to maintain files in file cabinets.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Normal office environment. It is anticipated that some stress will be associated with this position primarily due to deadlines and irregular workflow. It is necessary that the individual have the capacity to remain calm, considerate, and tactful.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employee is generally expected to work 5 days at the CCRESA Office/Local School District and facilitates services per week, 7 hours per day and be available during the core work hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (lunch hour permitted). Deviations to the generally expected schedule is allowed if approved in advance by the supervisor. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
TRAVEL:
Travel will be expected throughout Clinton County, such as between the six local school districts and the CCRESA Administrative Office.
