Position Overview
The Assistant Estimator will support the estimating team in preparing accurate and competitive bids for wet utilities and civil infrastructure projects. This role is ideal for someone with strong analytical skills, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for civil construction. You’ll work alongside experienced estimators and project teams to learn the ins and outs of cost estimating, takeoffs, and bid preparation related to water, sewer, and storm drain systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and bid preparation for wet utility projects, including water, sewer, and storm drain installations.
- Interpret and analyze plans, drawings, and specifications to identify scope, materials, and required utility components.
- Support the estimating team in preparing bid packages, proposals, and subcontractor solicitations.
- Input data into estimating software and ensure accuracy and completeness of all calculations.
- Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain pricing and clarify scope.
- Maintain historical cost data and assist in developing unit pricing and production rates for wet utility work.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project reviews as needed.
- Assist in handing off awarded projects to the operations team, including preparation of detailed estimate breakdowns.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred; equivalent field or estimating experience considered.
- 0–3 years of experience in civil construction estimating, preferably focused on wet utilities or underground utility installation.
- Familiarity with utility plans, trenching and shoring requirements, pipe installation safety and methods, and related construction practices.
- Proficiency in Excel; experience with estimating software
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines.
