Overview:
The Clara Martin Center is seeking respite workers in the Randolph, VT area to provide support & supervision for children who have emotional challenges. This person would provide therapeutic support and other individualized services for children and their families. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to enhancing the quality of life for those in their care, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment. This role involves providing temporary relief to primary caregivers, allowing them time to rest while ensuring that the needs of the individual are met.

If interested, candidate will be expected to agree to a home safety inspection before being considered for the role.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides supervision for a child or adult with severe emotional disturbance / mental illness that allows the family temporary relief from caring for the individual.
  • Responsible for in-home and/or out-of-home provision of trained respite service including: filling out an information form with the parent(s); planning and engaging in developmentally appropriate activities; and providing support for necessary educational actives.
  • Provides basic first aid plus crisis skills for handling medical emergencies and self-abusive/self-destructive behaviors; securing and using medical consent; giving medications (if authorized).
  • Develops basic interpersonal skills, such as listening and empathy, to effectively communicate with families (parents, siblings, guardians) and coworkers.
  • Assesses and builds on the strengths of the individual, families and/or children.
  • Maintains a positive relationship with families.
  • Establishes firm structure, maintains consistency and sets limits around child / adult’s behavior.
  • Models basic home and community living skills, provides a safe environment, and supports the daily routine of the family or individual.
  • Records and documents time by following established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates active involvement in supervision as evidenced by constructive participation, initiative and apparent effort.
  • Demonstrates constructive involvement with professionals and other organizations in the community that reflects positively on the Agency.
  • Supports the social mission of the Agency.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Abilities Required:

College level education and/or 2-3 years relevant experience. A history of work with individuals having severe emotional disturbances or mental illness, and work in families' homes desired. An understanding of cultural differences and values among families are a must. Dedication, motivation, self-awareness, flexibility, independence and emotional maturity are all necessary for this position, as is the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people from many disciplines and to promote teamwork. Good physical health, strength and agility are necessary.
