Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Equipment Operator with specialized expertise in gas pipeline installation and maintenance. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of operating large and small excavators and backhoes in tight, confined areas, particularly around live gas lines. This role focuses on residential and commercial underground gas line applications, requiring precision, safety, and strict adherence to PHMSA regulations and Operator Qualification (OQ) standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate heavy civil equipment—including large and small excavators and backhoes—in restricted spaces.
- Perform excavation and trenching around active gas lines with extreme caution and accuracy.
- Install, repair, and maintain underground gas pipelines for residential and commercial projects.
- Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and utility maps to ensure proper alignment and depth.
- Coordinate with site supervisors and utility companies to maintain compliance with PHMSA pipeline safety standards (49 CFR Parts 192 and 195).
- Support Operator Qualification (OQ) compliance by performing covered tasks only when qualified and maintaining documentation.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and report maintenance needs promptly.
- Follow all OSHA, local, and company safety protocols, especially when working near live utilities.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 7 years of experience operating heavy equipment around active gas lines.
- Proficiency with large and small excavators and backhoes in tight spaces.
- Strong understanding of underground utility installation and safety practices, including PHMSA pipeline safety regulations.
- Ability to work in challenging environments with minimal supervision.
- Gas certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Operator Qualification (OQ) Requirements:
- Must meet PHMSA OQ standards (49 CFR Part 192 Subpart N) for covered tasks such as excavation, backfilling, locating, and pipeline repair.
- Complete knowledge and performance evaluations for initial qualification and periodic requalification.
- Maintain documentation of training, testing, and requalification per company and regulatory requirements.
- Contractors must demonstrate compliance with the company’s written OQ program before performing covered tasks.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of trench safety and shoring techniques.
- Familiarity with local and state regulations for gas line installation.
- Experience with both residential and commercial projects.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor job sites with varying conditions.
- Requires physical stamina and ability to operate heavy machinery for extended periods.
