Pipelayer (Civil Construction Underground Utilities)

Job Summary:

Pipelayers are skilled tradesmen who install underground piping to connect buildings and building sites to water supplies, sewers, and stormwater management systems.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Digging and grading trenches to place pipe.
• Laying sections of pipe and completing connections between pipe sections.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment to remove and replace soil and earth.
• Determine grade of trenching using tools including lasers and transit levels.
• Operate cutting equipment to cut various types of piping materials.
• Operate small, powered equipment including tampers.
• Cut, fit, and seal various types of piping.
• Perform manual labor as required for preparing sites, dig trenches, set braces for supporting excavations, erect scaffolding and assisting in maintaining a clean job site.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by foreman/superintendent.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Ability to listen to, understand, and follow directions. Communicate effectively with crew members including written and spoken word.

• Ability to remain flexible as specific assignments change.
• Ability to work with a variety of personalities.
• Ability to think logically about work at hand and compare site conditions with project designs.
• Ability to read blueprints and other project related documents is preferred.

Education/Experience:

• Must have minimum of 1 year experience laying pipe in a trenched environment.
• Must be willing and able to become certified in Trenching for underground utilities and Confined Space.

Physical Requirements:

• Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time.
• Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
• Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb out of trenches using ladder.
• Must be able to work on Saturdays and at night, when needed. As the schedule is commonly a 6-day work week (Monday-Saturday)

Work Location

• Must have own reliable transportation to jobsite which vary within the Metro Nashville Area and surrounding counties.
