What are the responsibilities and job description for the PUBLIC WORKS - CITY OF WILLS POINT, TX position at CITY OF WILLS POINT?
The Public Works employee is responsible for; reading residential and commercial water meters and recording water consumption; identifying water meter equipment problems and performing water meter maintenance; providing general labor and assisting with routine preventative maintenance and repairs on city water and wastewater facilities and equipment; performing a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work, and operating a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of city streets and street drainage projects.
Duties include:
- Performs a variety of maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment (such as backhoe, trencher, loader, and dump truck) in the construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of city sewer, streets, and water drainage projects.
- Installs or repairs water and sewer systems, including making water and sewer taps; removing and replacing water meters, cleaning out, repairing, or raising manholes to ground or street level, and repairing or installing water lines.
- Inspects and/or repairs street drainage systems and sewer system at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and back-filing.
- Performs routine maintenance on water, sewer and street construction vehicles.
- Responds to complaints regarding leaks in pipes; evaluates situations; explains findings to supervisor.
- Verifies readings in cases where water consumption appears to be abnormal and records possible reasons for fluctuations.
- Directs customers’ questions about water services and water charges to the utility billing department as needed.
- Ensures that meters are registering properly, reports to supervisor on meter conditions, defects, or suspicious conditions.
- Provides water utility customer services including re-reading meters, turning meters on and off for new accounts and finalized accounts.
- Inspects meters for unauthorized connections and reports findings to supervisor immediately; also, may be required to prepare/fill out document(s)/affidavit(s) related to the unauthorized use of water (city services) for filing with the Municipal Court.
- Flushes water lines to ensure water quality; utilizes chlorine level testing device and other testing instruments.
- Performs utility locates; locates city water and sewer lines for contractors and construction.
- Spreads and shovels sand, asphalt, concrete and patching compounds in the construction, repair, and maintenance of streets.
- Mows, weed-eats and maintains city right-of-ways and city owned properties.
- Clears ditches and maintain city culverts.
- Sets up barricades, cones, construction signs and flags as needed.
- Loads, unloads, and moves heavy objects.
- Collects and disposes of dead trees, limbs, trash, and debris found along city streets, parks, and other areas of the City, as needed.

- Must possess the ability to operate and maintain a variety of power and manual tools and equipment.
- Must possess the ability to be trained in the materials, methods, techniques, and terminology used in maintenance and repair activities related to the city’s water/wastewater system, including how repair parts are applied to the water system including hydrants, pumps and valves.
- Must have knowledge of basic mathematical skills including percentages, fractions, decimals, and ratios.
- Must have a High School diploma or equivalent.
