JOB DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the School Crossing Guard is to provide assistance to children crossing streets and walking to and from school. Duties include holding a sign to control traffic and escorting school-aged children safely across various streets and intersections. 

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A SEASONAL, PART-TIME POSITION THAT IS ONLY 1 HOUR A DAY.  Hours are split shifts from 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 a.m. & 3:10 p.m. - 3:40 p.m. (approximately 5 total hours per week during school season)

All applicants applying for the position of School Crossing Guard must complete the background authorization form, authorizing the WSPD to run a preliminary driver's license and criminal history check.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Employs proper signals and all issued equipment designed to assist in the control of traffic during peak school traffic hours at designated crosswalk areas;
• Assists school-age children in crossing the street at designated intersections in a safe and orderly manner;
• Must be able to hold the stop sign above the head until children are across the intersection;
• Promptly notifies the Police Department of pedestrian accidents and real or potential safety hazards that interfere with or impede the safety and/or efficiency of moving pedestrians through an intersection;
• While performing the duties of this position, the school crossing guard is regularly required to stand, walk quickly, hear, speak clearly, and occasionally speak/hear over the sound of traffic and work in inclement weather;
• Regular and timely attendance is required;
• Maintains a positive, friendly, and effective working relationship with the general public and co-workers.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Effectively communicate verbally;
• Able to interpret traffic laws related to vehicles and pedestrians in a school zone;
• The ability to pass a police background investigation, including drug/alcohol screening and physical exam;
• The ability to perceive and respond appropriately and timely to potentially hazardous, uncertain, and emergency situations.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

• High School diploma or GED;
• Must be 18 years or older;
• Valid Texas class C driver’s license is required with a good driving record.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

• Bilingual
• Prior city/government experience

NOTE

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable and proven proficiency levels in the above-required knowledge, skills, abilities, education, training, or licensing could be considered as a possible substitute for the above industry-specified training or experience requirements for this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
• Work with frequent interruptions. Regular and timely attendance is required for this position;
• Listen, read, understand, and relays information;
• Demonstrate patience and flexibility in changing job demands and when interacting with employees, visitors, and the public; and
• Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
• Walk and stand for at least an hour maintaining high visibility for passing motorists and children, directing them where and when to cross the street or intersections.
• Use verbal commands and/or hand/arm signals to direct children to wait behind the curb until they can safely cross; and
• Hear sounds within the normal range of hearing in person during a noisy environment, in all weather conditions, and in the presence of noise.
• Manipulate and perform good hand, eye, and foot coordination, mobility, and dexterity;
• Maintain physical activity and mental alertness over prolonged periods of time;
• Effectively communicate, both orally and in written form;
• Maintain effective working relationships and represent the City in a positive manner at all times while engaged with City staff and Citizenry.
