Day to Day Job Duties


Supervision

  • Provide leadership/supervision of full-time/part-time employees and volunteers in the Fitness and Wellness Unit-Group Fitness team to include hiring, training, professional development, mentoring, evaluating and disciplining
  • Oversee multiple recreation centers group fitness programming
  • Set goals and parameters for staff to conduct diverse programs and activities utilizing departmental amenities
  • Facilitate work schedules that are appropriate to the teams programming and participation needs while remaining within budget
  • Handle difficult interpersonal working relationships with employees and the public
  • Identify and communicate parameters to subordinate staff for decisions they are empowered to make
  • Assist staff with problem solving to facilitate effective programming
  • Must possess the ability to promote teamwork, serve as a catalyst for a positive work environment, and collaborate with multiple work units
  • Responsible for ensuring group fitness programming is effectively planned, coordinated and evaluated
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate group fitness programs to serve the VB community
  • Ensure all Fitness and Wellness programs are offered based on trends and community demands
  • Ensure that cost recovery goals are made for the budget year
  • Report monthly, quarterly and yearly progress of all established goals


Budget/Statistics

  • Effectively utilize and track resources, including payroll
  • Project, track and meet revenue and expenditure targets
  • Monitor and purchase equipment and supplies for Fitness & Wellness program in compliance with city procurement processes
  • Prepare required reports and documents
  • Prepare statistical data for budgetary purposes ensuring completion with accuracy and submitted in a timely manner
  • Experience using microcomputers (Word, Excel, Outlook, Group Ex Pro, Teams, Oracle, VB Workday and databases for financials/programs


Customer Service

  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers in both written and oral forms
  • Ability to coach staff how to provide excellent customer service while promoting our programs and services
  • Must possess the ability to promote teamwork and serve as a catalyst for a positive work environment
  • Serve as onsite lead in absence of Recreation Specialist I
  • Provide direct service hours including, but not limited to: 2-4 hours teaching classes as well as subbing classes as needed
  • Ensure effective and timely communication is utilized to provide accurate information to the public
  • Serve as an Alpha I employee and First Responder
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.


Other Requirements:

In addition to the minimum requirements, the position also:

  • Requires a current and valid Driver’s license
  • Requires a First Responder Certification or must obtain within four (4) months of hire date and maintain the certification.


Preferences

In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application.


  • Current Nationally Recognized Certification in Group Fitness Instruction
  • Ability to teach multiple group fitness class formats
  • Experience supervising multiple fitness employees including hiring, training & performance management.
  • Experience developing and implementing group fitness programs
  • Tracking expenditures, meeting program goals


Schedule

The work schedule associated with this position varies to facilitate group fitness programing needs. Shifts could include early mornings beginning at 5:00 a.m. or late evenings until 9:30 p.m., and weekend shifts.

Work location may change based on operational needs on a rotating basis.


The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled at other facilities. Schedules will be adjusted to meet the needs of the Group Fitness programs. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours, overtime, split shifts or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.


Training

As a condition of employment, all employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided an approximate training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.


Alpha I

The position you are applying for is designated as Alpha I, requiring the selected candidate to work, regardless of the City’s operational status. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
