SCHEDULE: Monday thru Friday, 7am to 3:30pm

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Seasonal General Labor-Water Works position in South Bend’s Public Works Department is responsible for various entry-level duties related to the appearance and maintenance of water treatment facilities. This role involves performing manual and semi-skilled labor tasks such as cleaning, painting, mowing lawns, shoveling, and maintaining grounds around well houses, pumping stations, and filtration plants. The worker must also handle hazardous and nonhazardous chemicals, work in noisy environments, and maintain accurate daily documentation of completed tasks. This position requires minimal supervision and adherence to safety protocols, including wearing protective boots and appropriate work attire. The Seasonal General Labor-Water Works position plays a crucial role in supporting the overall maintenance and operational efficiency of water treatment facilities. By ensuring the cleanliness and upkeep of the facilities, this role helps maintain a safe and functional environment for the treatment processes. The worker’s efforts contribute to the reliability and effectiveness of the water treatment infrastructure, supporting the utility’s mission to provide safe and high-quality drinking water to the community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cleans, paints, mops, mows lawn, shovels and maintains grounds around all well houses, pumping stations, filtration plants.
  • Works around hazardous and nonhazardous chemicals at all station locations.
  • Works in and around noisy environments by industrial equipment in operation.
  • Must be able to perform assigned job duties with minimal supervision.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED; and an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to perform the essential duties of the class.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of City or County government a plus.
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools used with ground maintenance.
  • Knowledge and capability of servicing requirement for small mechanical equipment, i.e. weed eater, lawn mowers, and power washer.
  • Skilled in the operation of various hand and power tools, performing general maintenance, possesses the ability to communicate sufficiently enough to exchange and convey information and can receive and follow work instructions.
  • Knowledge of loading and unloading of trailers used to tow equipment around.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION:

  • Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record. Required

EQUIPMENT:

Pickup Truck, Trailer, Snow Blower, Mower, Trimmers, Custodial tools, and miscellaneous hand tools, all safety and personal protective equipment (PPE).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to climb, sit, walk, and talk or hear. Occasionally, the employee must use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The role also involves occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, often in adverse weather conditions. Employees may need to climb structures or descend into vaults and will be exposed to chemicals such as chlorine, hydrofluorosilicic acid, and phosphate. Working at water treatment facilities can involve exposure to dirt, noise, hazardous materials, confined spaces, and adverse weather. Employees frequently work alone and may be assigned irregular shifts, including nights and weekends, and must be available for work assignments seven days a week. Individuals may also be exposed to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, poor ventilation, chemicals, noise, and extreme temperatures.
