Parking Enforcement Officer Trainee positions, assigned to the Police Department in a training capacity, patrol City streets for parking violations, safety hazards, and turn over parking; issue parking citations to vehicles parked in violation of state and city parking regulations; drive a three-wheel vehicle to enforce, mark tires, report broken meters, and run vehicle registration checks; communicate with police dispatchers; control traffic; provide general information to the public; respond to parking complaints via department computer/phone, contacting citizens, and responding appropriately; prepare daily journals, communicating using email/phone; perform daily vehicle safety checks; and perform other duties as assigned.


Parking Enforcement Officer Trainee positions, assigned to the Stormwater Department, Operation Division in a training capacity, are required to remove litter and debris from roadways and curbsides; perform storm patrol; maintain, install, and repair street sweeping signs; and perform other duties as assigned.

     

      NOTES:

  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Candidates selected for positions in the Police Department will undergo a comprehensive character and background investigation, including a polygraph examination and fingerprint check prior to hire. Felony convictions, domestic violence convictions, or use of any illegal drugs may be disqualifying. Candidates screened by the San Diego Police Department must present proof of education when they submit their Background Investigation Questionnaire.
  • Parking Enforcement Officer Trainee employees will be required to work nights or unusual shifts for significant periods for which they may receive 5% additional pay.
  • Parking Enforcement Officer Trainee employees may be required to work weekends, holidays, and a 4-day/10 ½-hour schedule.
  • Parking Enforcement Officer Trainee employees will be required to perform frequent stooping, bending, squatting, reaching, twisting, and repeated entering/exiting vehicles, and/or walking up to nine hours per day in an urban setting which includes exposure to vehicle noise and exhaust, hard surfaces, and steep inclines.
  • Parking Enforcement Officer Trainee employees interact daily with members of the public who may become angry, difficult, and/or abusive.
  • Parking Enforcement Officer Trainee employees in the Stormwater Department must be able to lift 20 to 50 lbs., shovel curb gutters, and may be required to work storm patrol which includes filling and setting sandbags, clearing storm drain gates, etc.
  • Parking Enforcement Officer Trainee employees must successfully complete a six-week parking enforcement training program.

AGE: 18 years of age or older; except for high school graduates (or persons with GED equivalency) who are 17.


CITIZENSHIP: You must be a United States citizen or have the current legal right to work in the United States.


LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.


HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Experience enforcing codes and issuing citations. 
  • Experience in customer service which includes sensitive, adverse, or confrontational situations with the public.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes applicable to this position, which may include the following: confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; and fingerprinting. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes, including a polygraph examination and/or background investigation. All screening processes must be successfully completed before employment begins. A positive test result for alcohol, cannabis/marijuana, illegal drugs, or inadequately explained prescription drugs, or misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in any step of the screening or selection process, may constitute cause for disqualification or termination of employment.
