The City of Roanoke is seeking a crew lead for the Trails & Greenways section of the Parks and Recreation Department! The successful candidate will lead and assist a small work crew of highly-skilled Maintenance Technicians and semi-skilled and/or unskilled seasonal Maintenance Workers in performing natural and paved trail and greenway maintenance. Activities include but are not limited to: trash collection, mowing, construction and maintenance of natural surface trails, concrete work, light construction projects, and amenity maintenance. Additional duties may be assigned such as leading volunteer groups, snow removal, and other emergency tasks. May require night and weekend hours. Minimum qualifications include: high school diploma or general education degree (GED), valid Virginia driver’s license, and three to five years’ experience and/or training in designated trades area. SUMMARY
Supervises and participates in the work of a crew of highly skilled Maintenance Technicians and semi-skilled and/or unskilled seasonal Maintenance Workers involved in the cleaning and maintenance of trails, greenways, and blueways. Typical tasks include, but are not limited to: trash collection, mowing, construction and maintenance of natural surface trails, light construction projects, and amenity maintenance.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs work in the completion of greenway and blueway maintenance and trail construction
- Knowledge of and ability to skillfully operate a wide variety of mowers and equipment, including: Toro 5900, Ventrac, zero-turn and walk-behind mowers, weed eaters, edgers, blowers, front-end loader, forklift, backhoe, bobcat, mini skid steer, chainsaws, trail work tools, and tractors
- Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day’s assignment
- Load/unloads materials such as soil, mulch, gravel, etc.
- Performs minor repairs of greenways, blueway, and trails
- Operates heavy and light equipment for snow/ice removal
- Assists with training new staff
- Performs word processing, recordkeeping, and report preparation
- Follows established safety procedures
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises and leads a small full-time crew and part-time staff in maintenance and construction operations within assigned section. Assists the Trails & Greenways Coordinator with coordination and delegation of daily tasks and serves as section leader in absence of Program Coordinator. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with City policies and applicable laws.
CONDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement within 12 months of hire
- Must have a Registered Technician (RT) spraying license, and obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification in a specified area within 12 months of hire
QUALIFICATIONS

- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Three to five years’ training and/or experience in trail-building and maintenance, landscape and turf maintenance, construction or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement (within 12 months)
- Possession of a Registered Technician (RT) spraying license, and obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification in a specified area (within 12 months)
- Proficient in the use of computers and standard office equipment and software (i.e. Microsoft Office/365)
- Ability to perform physical labor in varying weather conditions
- Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare plans and detailed reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
This position will require possession of an appropriate Class B Commercial Driver's License with an air brake endorsement. This can also be obtained within 12 months of hire.
