The City of Roanoke is currently seeking an energetic, dedicated team player to a vacant Maintenance Tech IV (Right-of-Way Tractor Crew Leader) position in our Department of Public Works - Transportation Division.
A Right-of-Way Tractor Crew Leader with the City of Roanoke leads a crew responsible for vegetation maintenance within City Rights-of-Way including: mowing on a 28-day cycle, herbicide/fertilizer application, and landscape maintenance and renovation. Includes supervision of approximately 5-6 field operations staff. Supervision duties include: Assigns, leads, and works alongside a diverse team of maintenance technician crew members that set up work zones, mow, trim, blow, edge, mulch, aerate, overseed, and apply herbicides/fertilizers in the Rights-of-Way. Discusses job requirements with, and receives detailed instruction from the Landscape Coordinator. Must coordinate and maintain daily work schedules and track job progress, inspect work sites and enforce all safety standards including work zone safety. Must have excellent problem solving, decision making, verbal and written skills, and team leadership ability that results successful outcomes.
Candidates must have the ability to use various computer hardware such as desktops, laptops, and mobile devices as well as various software platforms such as Microsoft Office Suite, QAlert, ArcGIS, and VueWorks. Position operates heavy and light equipment during snow removal efforts and may be involved with special events and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed.High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 3 to 5 years' experience and/or training in supervision, mowing, applying herbicides, applying fertilizer, and other landscape maintenance tasks or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to obtain a valid Class B CDL license within 6 months of employment with air brake and tanker endorsements. Must possess a Registered Technician Pesticide certificate and Certified Fertilizer Applicator Certificate within 12 months of employment. SUMMARY
Supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in highly skilled maintenance, and landscaping activities. Performs work in multiple skilled trades.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following depending on area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned.
Assigns and supervises the work of maintenance workers and technicians
Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instruction from supervisor
Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions
Requisitions necessary equipment and materials
Maintains time and material records and prepares simple reports
Performs or assists in performing more difficult or skilled tasks
May perform inspection of playgrounds and associated equipment
Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding
Coordinates with other department operational and technical personnel in the performance of assigned tasks
Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal
Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law.
Follows safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment.
Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three to five years experience and/or training in trades area assigned or equivalent combination of education and experience.LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of an appropriate class A, B or C commercial driver's license. May require master-level licensure in an area of skilled trades. May require registered technician license and Certified Fertilizer Applicator certification. May be required to qualify for certification as a State Inspector.
