Lifeguard

HOURS

The pool will be open June 12 – August 30, 2026. Work hours will vary based on operational needs and staffing levels. Shifts include days and evenings, Monday through Sunday. This position is seasonal and temporary in nature.
 Overtime is paid for hours worked in excess of 48 hours per workweek.

NATURE OF WORK

Under general supervision of the Facility Manager and reporting directly to the Pool Supervisor, this position performs lifeguarding duties and assists with daily pool operations. Monitors pool activities from a lifeguard station, ensures a clean and safe environment for patrons, follows established pool procedures, and enforces facility rules. Assists patrons and takes appropriate action to correct unsafe or unacceptable behavior.   

HIRING INCENTIVE 

A $100 end-of-season retention incentive will be awarded to employees who remain employed through the end of the season, work a minimum of 200 hours, and maintain satisfactory performance and attendance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Maintain alert and attentive surveillance of the water and surrounding areas. 
• Monitor waterslide riders and diving board users.
• Provide effective up-to-date lifesaving skills when the situation presents itself. Provide first aid for accident victims.
• Know, obey, and enforce pool rules, policies and procedures.
• Recognize problems and take corrective action.
• Complete accident and incident reports as required.
• Perform daily custodial duties to keep facility clean and safe.
• Assist with admitting patrons into the facility, greeting groups, and explaining rules.
• Assist with daily operations, including opening and closing procedures. Establish good rapport with patrons and fellow staff. Treat all patrons fairly and equitably and address customer service issues as needed.
• Attend orientation, staff and planning meetings.
• Work scheduled shifts and arrive on time ready to work.

• Ability to perform water rescues and administer first aid using proper techniques.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE

Required before start date:

• American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be at least 15 years of age by the date of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous lifeguard experience. 
• Fluency in Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese or other non-English languages commonly spoken in the City of Richfield.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily performed in a public swimming pool environment, which requires stamina for physical activity such as performing moderate to heavy lifting of pool equipment or children and adults who may require removal from the pool.  Ability to work in the heat and sun.

The physical demands that are described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.  

Must have the ability to: 

• Stand, stoop, kneel, reach, bend, climb, push and pull materials and supplies weighing approximately 20-60 lbs.
• Vision and hearing must be sufficient to see and hear adults and children in crowded and noisy conditions. Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or by telephone and radio. 
• Finger dexterity to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or to operate safety equipment. 
• Must possess the ability to swim, dive, and perform water rescues consistent with lifeguard certification standards, including assisting in lifting or removing patrons from the water using proper techniques and equipment.
