POLICE VICTIM/WITNESS ADVOCATE
Portland Police Department
The Portland Police Department is seeking a compassionate and motivated individual to provide assistance to crime victims within the Police Department. This position works in collaboration with the Office of the Attorney General, the District Attorney's Office, the Courts, Department of Health and Human Services, and other community agencies. This person will be responsible for providing victims of crime with information, advocating on their behalf, and referring them to support services. A successful applicant will have demonstrated experience in advocacy and social services. Experience with the Maine Criminal Justice system is preferred.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Graduation from a four-year college, with a specialization in psychology, social work, criminal justice, or sociology.
- Completion of the Maine Victim Assistance Academy, or substantial equivalent.
- Working knowledge of community services, operation of the Police Department, courts and social service agencies in the Greater Portland Area.
- Valid Maine Class C driver’s license.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Experience in and ability to work with victims of crime.
- Flexibility of work hours for liaison work performed at various times and the willingness and ability to be on a 24-hour on-call basis.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with victims, social workers, subordinates and community resource persons.
- Ability to coordinate and make judgements on appropriateness of services.
- Ability to provide information and educational materials to crime victims.
- Ability to supervise and direct the work of interns/volunteers.
- Strong conflict resolution and team-building skills.
- Proven ability to work with socially diverse populations.

Salary & Benefits:
This is a union position, Pro-Tech (Grade 6), Salary range $27.32 to $34.61/hour, based on experience.

Salary : $27 - $35
