Job Details

The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Public Works Maintenance Worker I, Public Works Maintenance Worker II or Public Works Maintenance Worker III classification. The hourly rate for the Public Works Maintenance Worker I is $18.81 per hour; for the Public Works Maintenance Worker II is $19.75 per hour; and for the Public Works Maintenance Worker III is $20.74.

Public Works Maintenance Worker I (The job descriptions for the Public Works Maintenance Worker II and Public Works Maintenance Worker III are listed below.)

Summary of Duties: Under close supervision, the Public Works Maintenance Worker performs light to heavy manual labor to repair and maintain City of Plano infrastructure within streets, alleys, easements and Rights of Way.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the entry-level classification in the Public Works Maintenance Worker series. The incumbent follows routine procedures and guidelines in the application of prescribed duties and works under close supervision. This classification is distinguished from the Public Works Maintenance Worker II and III in that the latter performs more complex technical duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

Examples Of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

General Job Functions:

  • Assists preparing work areas; and securing job sites by setting up traffic control devices such as cones, barricades and advance warning signs.
  • Prepares tools, materials, and equipment necessary for daily tasks; cleans, inspects and maintains tools, equipment, and trucks.
  • Complies with all written city policies and procedures
  • Understands how to use basic personal protective equipment
  • Drives to and from work locations as assigned
  • Repairs and maintains City infrastructure in relation to streets, alley, sidewalks, curbs and storm drains and miscellaneous repairs as required.
  • Operates various equipment to include, vibratory compactor, mud jack machine, crack sealer, jackhammer, mortar mixer, weed-eaters, chain saws, grinder, shovel, and related power and hand tools.
  • Assists in debris removal from rights-of-way and drainage ways
  • Performs temporary street repairs such as pothole repair.
  • Assists with setting up forms for curb pours, sidewalks and street repairs.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Marginal Duties:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Decisions: The incumbent is responsible for inspecting assigned equipment, identifying potential safety hazards and the use of safe work methods and safety equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: Safety practices and procedures; proper and efficient use of hand and power tools; methods of tool and equipment maintenance; traffic control and barricade placement.

Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating light equipment; performing routine construction and repair work; completing basic mathematical calculations and measurements.

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.

Experience: One (1) year of previous maintenance or construction experience preferred.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications: Must have a valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license upon employment.

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Public Works Maintenance Worker II (The job description for the Public Works Maintenance Worker III is listed below.)

Summary of Duties: Under regular supervision, the Public Works Maintenance Worker performs light to heavy manual labor to repair and maintain City of Plano infrastructure including water lines, sewer lines, streets, sidewalks and alleys with the City’s easements and Rights of Way.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the mid-level classification in the Public Works Maintenance Worker series. The incumbent follows routine procedures and guidelines in the application of prescribed duties and works under close supervision. This classification is distinguished from the Public Works Maintenance Worker III in that the latter performs more complex technical duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

General Job Functions:

  • Assists preparing work areas; and securing job sites by setting up traffic control devices such as cones, barricades and advance warning signs.
  • Prepares tools, materials, and equipment necessary for daily tasks; cleans, inspects and maintains tools, equipment, and trucks.
  • Complies with all written city policies and procedures.
  • Understands how to use basic personal protective equipment.
  • Drives to and from work locations as assigned.
  • All functions assigned to Public Works Maintenance Worker I Position
  • Able to operates various equipment to include tandem dump truck, roller, forklift, centrifugal trash pumps, vibratory compactor, mud jack machine, crack sealer, jackhammer, mortar mixer, weed-eaters, chain saws, grinder, shovel, and related power and hand tools.
  • Able to drive dump truck for assignments as required by supervisor.
  • Proficient in the setup of forms for curb pours, sidewalks and street repairs with minimal supervision.
  • Able to monitor equipment operator to prevent damage to other utility lines while digging.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: Safety practices and procedures; proper and efficient use of hand and power tools; methods of tool and equipment maintenance; traffic control and barricade placement.

Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating light equipment; performing routine construction and repair work; completing basic mathematical calculations and measurements.

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.

Experience: One (1) year of previous maintenance or construction experience required. Two (2) years of previous maintenance or construction experience preferred.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the advanced classification in the Public Works Maintenance Worker series. The incumbent plans detailed methods to attain desired objectives working within established policies. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in developing processes and procedures. Works under indirect supervision, conferring with supervisor on unusual matters.

General Job Functions:

  • Assists preparing work areas; and securing job sites by setting up traffic control devices such as cones, barricades and advance warning signs.
  • Prepares tools, materials, and equipment necessary for daily tasks; cleans, inspects and maintains tools, equipment, and trucks.
  • Complies with all written city policies and procedures
  • Understands how to use basic personal protective equipment
  • Drives to and from work locations as assigned
  • All functions assigned to Public Works Maintenance Worker II Position
  • Operates various equipment to include tandem dump truck, roller, forklift, centrifugal trash pumps, vibratory compactor, mud jack machine, crack sealer, jackhammer, mortar mixer, weed-eaters, chain saws, grinder, shovel, and related power and hand tools.
  • Pours and finishes concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks and streets.
  • Inspects work in progress and at completion for compliance with applicable policies, procedures, plans, specifications and standards of quality and safety.
  • May answer emergency calls from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action such as placing traffic barricades, signage and cones.
  • Performs routine inspections of assigned areas to detect any necessary repairs or hazardous conditions.
  • Trains other Maintenance Workers on all aspects of field work and safety

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: Three years of previous maintenance or construction experience preferred. Two (2) years of previous maintenance or construction experience required.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications: Must have a valid Texas Class “A” Commercial driver’s license upon employment. Must have Work Zone Safety Certification.

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings, streets, and facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets ; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, and to operate varied hand tools, power tools, and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance and repairs. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, dust, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Public Works employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to pull stand-by duty and/or work extended hours, holidays and weekends assisting with workloads of assigned division or assisting other departments.
