The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Public Works Equipment Operator or Senior Public Works Equipment Operator classification. The range for the Public Works Equipment Operator is $22.86 - $27.44 per hour and for the Senior Public Works Equipment Operator is $25.21 - $31.51.

The City of Plano is looking for motivated Public Works Equipment Operator or Senior Public Works Equipment Operator to play an important role in maintaining and improving the infrastructure our community depends on every day. In this hands on position, you will help repair and maintain City streets, sidewalks, and public systems that keep the community safe and running smoothly. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining City vehicles and equipment, calculating materials needed for projects, servicing water mains, taps, and valves, painting and flushing fire hydrants, and performing traffic control around active work sites. This role also supports the upkeep of public spaces by clearing trees, brush, and debris from streets, rights of way, and storm drains. The Senior level also helps guide and support team members by assisting with training and coordinating work activities while ensuring job sites are set up safely and efficiently.

Summary of Duties: Under basic supervision, the Public Works Equipment Operator is responsible for operating specialized equipment in the installation, repair, and maintenance activities of assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the Public Works Equipment Operator series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Public Works Equipment Operator, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

General Job Functions

  • Participates in routine construction, repair, and routine maintenance tasks, repairs City streets and sidewalks.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains vehicles and equipment.
  • Calculates the amount of materials needed for tasks.
  • Services water mains, taps, and valves; paints fire hydrants.
  • Performs traffic control around work sites.
  • Cuts trees and brush; remove brush, debris, and trash from streets, right-of-ways, and storm drains.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Marginal Duties:

  • Performs all related duties.

Typical Decisions: The incumbent is responsible for: inspecting assigned equipment to ensure it is in operable condition; identifying potential safety hazards; use of safe work methods and safety equipment; operating equipment within the guidelines of the appropriate Operator’s Manual.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: Operation and maintenance of equipment; routine construction, repair, and maintenance methods; basic safety standards and practices for the operation of tools and equipment.

Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating light equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of assigned functional operations.

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in construction which included operation of light equipment.

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class A commercial driver’s license prior to employment. Additional certifications may be required depending on area of assignment.

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Senior Public Works Equipment Operator

Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Public Works Equipment Operator, Senior is responsible for operating specialized equipment in the installation, repair and maintenance of facilities in assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the advanced journey-level classification in the Public Works Equipment Operator series. The incumbent plans detailed methods to attain desired objectives working within established policy. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in developing processes and procedures. Works under indirect supervision, conferring with supervisor on unusual matters.

Examples Of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Participate in routine construction, repair, and routine maintenance tasks, repairs City infrastructure.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains vehicles and equipment; completes pre-trip inspections sheets for vehicles.
  • Sets up job sites; verifies work area is secured with the proper use of cones and barricades.
  • Loads and unloads tractors.
  • Calculates the number of materials needed for tasks.
  • Services water mains, taps, and valves; paints and flushes fire hydrants; checks manholes; raises meter boxes.
  • Performs traffic control around work sites.
  • Cut trees and brush; remove brush, debris, and trash from streets, rights-of-way, and storm drains.
  • Assists in training and leading the work activities of others.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.

Experience: Three (3) years of construction or similar experience, which includes the operation of light to heavy equipment such as backhoe, skid steer, wheel loader, pneumatic breaker, etc.

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class A commercial driver’s license prior to employment. Additional Water/ Wastewater certifications as required.

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions : Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings, streets, and facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets ; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, and to operate varied hand tools, power tools, and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance and repairs. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, dust, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
