Join the City of Plano’s award-winning Sustainability & Environmental Services team as a Special Projects Coordinator and contribute to high-impact initiatives that advance environmental stewardship across the community.This dynamic position supports a wide range of environmental projects as needs arise, providing critical analytical and implementation support to help the City achieve measurable sustainability outcomes.
The hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.
The target hiring range for this position is $57,817 - $79,679, depending on qualifications.

Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Environmental Education & Community Outreach Coordinator is responsible for presentations, programs and activities for schools, community and civic groups and businesses. Responsible for supporting and coordinating a variety of environmental initiatives as needs arise, including data analysis, grant application and management, and large-scale project coordination to advance City sustainability and operational goals.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of: Environmental issues; solid waste service; teaching and public education practices; volunteer group management and organization, environmental conservation methods; water conservation, composting, Texas native plants and plant management, recycling, litter abatement, and energy conservation practices; principles, practices, and methods of marketing.
Skill in: Providing effective and persuasive presentations; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; organizing events and activities; recruiting, leading, and maintaining a strong volunteer base, facilitation, attention to detail; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other City employees and the public.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, Sustainability, Landscaping, Public Relations, or related field.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in program management or teaching.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver’s license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law).
Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: When performing office work: This is primarily a sedentary classification although standing in work areas and walking and driving between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.
When performing field work: Must enjoy the outdoors and working in varied weather conditions. Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings and facilities; strength, stamina and mobility to perform light to medium physical work and operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking and working in a variety of weather conditions including high heat and cold. Finger dexterity is needed to operate tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance, repairs, and various daily tasks. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees interact with staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures and administering program activities.

- Assists with the research, preparation, and administration of grant applications and compliance documentation.
- Coordinates implementation of large-scale projects, including vendor coordination, scheduling, budgeting support, and performance tracking.
- Collaborates with internal departments, external partners, and stakeholders to advance cross-functional initiatives.
- Conducts research and evaluates emerging technologies, best practices, and funding opportunities to support innovation.
- Prepares technical summaries, presentations, and briefing materials for leadership and stakeholders.
- Designs and implements various sustainability projects.
- Works toward integrating sustainability into city plans, programs, policies, and performance measures and evaluate the environmental and social effects of proposed projects.
- Conducts Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions inventory every 2-3 years.
- Works with various government partners and educational institutions to reduce GHG emissions.
- Provides analysis and guidance to co-workers and community members on sustainability priorities.
- Helps develop and prepares new or updated code amendments, regulations, policies, and procedures supporting the implementation of the City’s sustainability plans, as directed.
- Collects and analyzes technical and financial data related to alternative fuel and electricity cost-effectiveness.
- Uses software to develop dashboards and visualizations for key performance metrics and indicators, including submittal of required reporting for various programs and/or for benchmarking city performance.
- Supports regulatory reporting, benchmarking efforts, and documentation of sustainability performance indicators.
- Monitors project progress, ensures adherence to timelines and requirements, and recommends process improvements.
