Heavy Equipment Operator

Job Description Summary

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, operates various vehicles, heavy equipment and specialized equipment within a City department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Operates equipment of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of equipment, materials and supplies.

• Operates construction equipment, including backhoes, front-end loaders and other hydraulic equipment.

• Performs the cleaning and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

• Performs snow and ice removal.

• Maintains roads and ditches.

• Patches pot holes; repairs cuts and overlays.

• Performs concrete work, including curbs, gutters and sidewalks.

• Cleans drains.

• Operates various landfill equipment.

• Maintains landfill stops and roads.

• Maintains City alleys.

• Maintains street lighting; changes lights.

• Performs trash pickup.

• Maintains fences.

• May perform mosquito control.

• May perform the demolition of homes and buildings.

• May perform paint striping.

• Ensures safety rules and regulations are followed.

• May serve on an on-call rotation schedule.

• Supports the relationship between the City of Plainview and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge:

• City organization, operations, policies and procedures.

• Construction, maintenance and repair practices and methods.

• Operation of motorized construction and maintenance equipment and vehicles.

• Mosquito control practices and methods.

• Safety practices and procedures.

• Customer service principles and practices

Skill in:

• Using power and hand tools and equipment

• Operating various motorized vehicles and equipment.

• Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other City staff and the general public.

• Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent; AND two years of heavy equipment and vehicle operations experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION :

• Possession of a Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s license or ability to obtain within 6 (six) months of hiring.

• May require possession of a Class A or B MSW Operator license.

• May require possession of a noncommercial pesticide applicator license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in an outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to climb ladders. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
