JOB TITLE: WORKING FOREPERSON III
DEPARTMENT: WASTEWATER DIVISION, DPSU

Provides frontline supervision and hands-on technical leadership in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems supporting the City’s water and wastewater operations.

Responsibilities
While performing the duties of the Working Foreperson III, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with other staff members and/or third parties transacting business with the City. Incumbent may be required to work at any time during the 24-hour day to respond to emergency needs or weather-related events.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (The physical demands listed here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations are considered to ensure individuals with disabilities can perform essential functions.)
May be required to operate standard office equipment including computers and keyboards, at efficient speed; and move throughout the various municipal building(s) which may include flights of stairs. Ability and agility sufficient to operate valves and equipment, climb tanks, enter vaults and underground tanks through small access manways, lift up to 50lbs. from ground to shoulder height, open manhole covers etc. May be required to operate the various equipment and machines located throughout the water-wastewater campus.
HOURS
Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week
7:00am – 3:30pm
Salary
Starting rate $27.84 - $29.53 per hour
Annual increases up to $40.88 per hour

Responsibilities
- Supervises, assigns, and participates in the work of Water Machinery Repairpersons and other personnel engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment used in water distribution, wastewater collection, and treatment systems.
- Plans, schedules, and coordinates daily work activities, ensuring efficient use of personnel, equipment, and materials.
- Provides hands-on technical support in the installation, repair, and maintenance of pumps, motors, generators, valves, chlorination systems, engines, gates, and process piping.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable safety standards and regulations, including those established by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); enforces safe work practices and conducts safety briefings as needed.
- Inspects work in progress and upon completion to ensure adherence to specifications, accepted trade practices, and departmental standards.
- Responds to emergency situations, including equipment failures, system outages, and weather-related events; may be required to work outside normal hours.
- Performs and oversees preventative maintenance programs and troubleshooting activities to ensure reliable operation of water and wastewater systems.
- Maintains inventory of mechanical parts and supplies, assists in procurement, and ensures availability of critical components.
- Prepares and maintains records, including work orders, maintenance logs, and equipment documentation.
- Coordinates with supervisors, engineers, contractors, and other departments to support maintenance and capital improvement activities.
- Performs skilled trades work, including pipefitting, welding, and mechanical repairs, as required.
- Performs incidental building, grounds, and facility maintenance to support overall operations.
- Trains and mentors staff, ensuring proper use of equipment, adherence to procedures, and development of technical skills.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
- High School education or equivalent.
- Two years’ experience in the maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems involving pumps, motors, engines, valves, plumbing, collector mechanisms etc.
- Two years’ acceptable experience supervising workers in the machinery maintenance trade.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with the capabilities and use of small hand and power tools.
- Familiarity with the basics of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic control systems.
- Requires strong communication skills to work effectively with a diverse population.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
