About This Position

The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department's Traffic Services Division is dedicated to ensuring the safe and efficient movement of vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. The Traffic Signal Shop plays a critical role in this mission by constructing, remodeling, and maintaining signalized intersections citywide.

The Street Transportation Department, Traffic Services Division, has a vacancy for a Traffic Signal Technician Foreman. The Traffic Signal Technician Foreman is responsible for supervising and training skilled technicians and trainees in the installation, modification, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of traffic signal control equipment and related devices.

The key responsibilities of this position include and are not limited to:

  • Inspecting and maintaining Light Rail Train (LRT) traffic signal integration at city intersections, while coordinating with transit agencies and engineers to ensure compliance with rail safety standards and recommending enhancements to rail signal timing and detection systems.
  • Overseeing the installation, inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance of traffic signal systems including controllers, cabinets, and detection equipment in the field.
  • Estimating time and materials for installation and maintenance tasks by utilizing work plans, blueprints, and schematic diagrams.
  • Coordinating with construction supervisors, contractors, engineers, City departments, and other stakeholders to ensure timely completion of installation and repair schedules.
  • Conducting inspections of existing traffic signal facilities and installations, recommending alterations or upgrades as needed to ensure compliance, reliability, and operational efficiency.

This position reports to the Traffic Signal Supervisor. The Traffic Signal Shop is located at 2141 E. Jefferson, Phoenix, AZ. 85034.

The Shifts And Work Schedule Available Are As Follows

  • A shift: 4 days/10 hrs. Mon. - Thurs. 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM
  • B shift: 4 days/10 hrs. Tues. - Fri. 5:00 AM to 3:30 PM
  • C shift: 4 days/10 hrs. Mon. - Thurs. 6:00 PM to 4:30 AM
  • D shift: 5 days / 8 hrs. Mon. - Fri. 7 AM to 3:30 PM

Due to the importance of proper traffic signal operation for both vehicles and pedestrians, this position requires availability for scheduled and unscheduled emergency overtime, off-shift work, holiday, and weekend assignments as needed.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Knowledge Of

  • Hazards and safety practices of electrical and electronic trades.
  • Testing and evaluating traffic signal control equipment for system compatibility.

Ability To

  • Review and verify the quality of technicians' work with attention to detail.
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather environments and provide hands-on assistance to traffic technicians.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate with various stakeholders, construction supervisors, contractors, engineers, and City departments to meet deadlines.
  • Perform standby duty by covering dispatch responsibilities and providing support to the on-call technicians.

SALARY

Pay Range: $35.08 to $51.83 per hour.

Hiring Range: $35.08 to $42.64 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three years of experience working with electronic traffic signal control devices.
  • One year in a supervisory or lead capacity.
  • Associate's degree in electronics.
  • Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Working Conditions

  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds long distances (more than 20 feet).
  • Perceiving the full range of the color spectrum, such as working with electrical wires.
  • Bending or stooping repeatedly or continually, such as performing inspections and repairs.
  • Walking or standing for prolonged periods, which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
  • Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes, such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
  • Flexibility and reliability in working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above plus experience with/in:

  • Managing daily field operations and training technicians.
  • Working with Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) including light rail intersections.
  • Overseeing and assisting technicians at multiple field locations while working with diverse electronic and low voltage systems to ensure safe, accurate, and timely completion of work.
  • Leading field crews safely during traffic signal installation or maintenance by enforcing safety protocols, ensuring regulatory compliance, and managing risks in active roadway or intersection environments.
  • Planning and managing large scale preventive maintenance programs, including route structuring, scheduling, and documentation, while maintaining operational reliability with limited staffing resources.
  • Fabricating and supervising the creation of specialized testing equipment.
