About This Position
The City of Phoenix Planning and Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring the safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. A host of advisory and governing bodies of residents as well as elected officials provide oversight as the city grows and needs to arise. The process is governed through the development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances.
The Planning & Development Department is seeking a detail oriented, customer focused Engineering Technician to join their Inspections team.
The Engineering Technician position with the Inspections team performs entry level technical work such as conveying general information to customers regarding department policies, procedures, and codes and ordinances pertaining to construction drawing/permit applications. They'll assist the public with project related processes and information for site, fire, and building permits.
Key responsibilities include answering telephone calls and relaying information or directing the caller to the appropriate persons for action, scheduling inspections, performing data entry and retrieval for staff and customers, providing customer referral or information service activities, updating daily logs, and verifying information on building permit applications for accuracy and completeness.
This position is assigned to a high traffic public counter communications call center and requires strong communication skills, accuracy in cash handling, and the ability to provide excellent service in a fast-paced environment.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Pay Range: $21.02 to $32.62 per hour.
Hiring Range: $21.02 to $28.17 per hour.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Proficient communication skills to assist internal and external customers in a fast-paced public setting.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks using knowledge and resources with limited direct supervision.
- Ability to complete data entry according to the required permit into KIVA or SHAPE Phoenix database.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other employees, the general public, and related organizations.
- Ability to produce written documents or e-mails without spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.
- Knowledge of research methods to utilize multiple resources and provide accurate records.
Pay Range: $21.02 to $32.62 per hour.
Hiring Range: $21.02 to $28.17 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications
- One year of experience in paraprofessional engineering work.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Experience working at a front counter or in a call center environment.
- Experience working in a field employee environment.
- Experience working as Engineering Technician in a Technical Field.
- Experience in data entry.
- Three or more years of experience providing customer service by telephone, email, or in person.
- KIVA or Shape PHX experience.
- Bilingual, fluency in Spanish.
