Overview
The City of Okeechobee, Florida is seeking its next City Administrator. The City (population 5,456) is a friendly, rural small town community. The City Council is a 5-member board, elected at large. One member is appointed as the Mayor for a two-year term. The City Administrator oversees the departments of Administration, Finance, General Services (Building Permits, Planning and Zoning), and Public Works. The City government includes a Police Department, directed by an appointed Police Chief, with a Code Enforcement division; and a City Clerk’s Office, directed by an elected City Clerk. Fire Rescue, EMS, and Animal Control Services are contracted out to Okeechobee County. Water and wastewater services are provided by the Okeechobee Utility Authority.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all laws and acts of the City Council subject to enforcement by the City Administrator or by officers subject to the supervision of the City Administrator are faithfully executed. Prepare and submit the annual budget, budget message, and capital outlay program.
- Negotiate leases, contracts, and other agreements, including consultation services, subject to approval by the City Council.
- Provide leadership and direction to departments under their supervision. Keep the City Council fully advised of the financial conditions and future needs of the City.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years experience in municipal management or similar governmental administration.
- Excellent communication skills for engaging with residents, officials, and external partners. Candidates should possess a comprehensive understanding of local government operations or similar organizational structures. A background in public administration or related fields is highly desirable.
