Position Summary
The Building Code Compliance Coordinator plays a vital role in ensuring adherence to city codes and regulations. This position is responsible for coordinating inspections of vacant buildings, structures damaged by fire or vandalism, and unauthorized work, as well as planning and zoning compliance, among other duties as assigned. The coordinator will conduct thorough research into code compliance complaints and investigations, follow up with property owners regarding identified infractions, and work collaboratively to resolve these issues.
The ideal candidate will possess strong skills in human relations and dispute resolution, demonstrating the ability to apply independent judgment and decision-making to address non-routine challenges. Additionally, the Building Code Compliance Coordinator will serve as a resource for citizens, developers, and business owners, providing guidance and assistance related to the City’s municipal code requirements.

Essential Functions
- Coordinating Inspections: Organizing and overseeing inspections of vacant buildings, structures damaged by fire or vandalism, and unauthorized work.
- Researching Code Compliance Complaints: Conducting thorough investigations and follow-ups on code compliance issues and infractions.
- Maintaining Public Correspondence: Responding to inquiries and concerns from the public regarding building compliance issues.
- Tracking the Vacant Building Registry: Updating and maintaining the registry of vacant properties, including tracking their progress through various stages.
- Attending Meetings: Participating in monthly Planning & Zoning meetings and reporting on assigned tasks and projects.
- Issuing Notices of Violation: Communicating with property owners and tenants regarding compliance violations and issuing formal notices when necessary.
- Creating Research Packets: Preparing comprehensive packets that facilitate the analysis of properties before site visits.
- Collaborating with Other Departments: Working with Planning and Zoning, Code Compliance, and other relevant departments to address public concerns and ensure effective interdepartmental communication.
- Providing Guidance: Serving as a resource for citizens, developers, and business owners regarding municipal code requirements.
- Participating in Continuous Learning: Engaging in ongoing education and training to stay updated on codes, regulations, and best practices.
- Contributing to Team Development: Assisting in team dynamics and development efforts, which may include mentoring or supporting new team members.
- Accepts and performs in a timely and effective manner changes in work assignments and/or how work is performed.
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED); Required.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in a customer service and/or building-related role, or any combination of experience that offers equivalent knowledge and skills.
- International Code Council (ICC) Certified Building Inspector certification is preferred; however, candidates must be able to obtain this certification within 12 months of employment.
- Ability to demonstrate effective collaboration, teamwork, and conflict resolution.
- Must be able to operate under standard office practices and procedures, including the operation of standard office equipment.
- Ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnical, and cultural backgrounds in person or over the telephone.
- Ability to work both independently and on a team to complete assigned special projects and tasks in addition to fundamental responsibilities and duties of the position.
- Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer using standard and customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks.
- Ability and willingness to learn and use new skills brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
- Work is performed primarily in both an office and field environment.
