Job Function:

Assist children in entering and exiting schools and crossing roadways. Insure the safety of the children. Bolo for suspicious person or vehicles in the area of schools. Smooth and efficient operation of school crossings. Must have knowledge of the school zone locations within the City of Mount Dora.  Must be able to operate radio equipment; to walk and stand for periods of at least two-hour intervals. This is a part-time position working approximately 15 hrs/week.

Essential Duties:

  1. Understand and properly utilize police radio equipment.
  2. Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
  3. Use a police whistle, but only attract the attention of motorists.
  4. Report missing of defective/damage street signs and equipment.
  5. Observe and obtain tag numbers, vehicle descriptions, and driver descriptions of traffic violators and suspicious persons and pass information on to police officers.
  6. Clear roadway of children when emergency vehicles approach.
  7. Cross children when traffic is clear and safety allows.
  8. Stop traffic for children to cross when no other avenues exist for the children to cross.
  9. Endure verbal and metal abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of others.
  10. Turn on traffic control devices and/or move signs to roadway and back out again as needed.
  11. Performs related functions as assigned.
  12. Work special events.
  13. Give directions to citizens.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with the locations of school zones, with the City of Mount Dora. 
  • Familiarity with the location and purposes of street and traffic signs within the school zone, understanding of the principles of traffic control devices and familiarity with traffic conditions at site.
  • Must understand that they are not police officers and cannot forcibly apprehend violators and must have knowledge of the extent of the responsibility.
  • Be respectful and courteous.
  • Must have alertness to be able to watch for emergency vehicles, traffic problems, suspicious persons, and other potential hazardous situations.
  • Must appear on time and be neat in appearance.
  • Must demonstrate ethical and professional behavior.
  • Must speak clearly.
  • Must be able to operate safety equipment.
  • Operate radio equipment.
  • Maintain personal fitness.
  • Knowledge of the working and procedures of the department.
  • No felony convictions.
  • No current drug use.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Must have valid Florida driver's license.
  • Complete the required National Incident Management System (NIMS) training within 6 months of completion of probationary period.

 

Essential Physical Skills:

  • Ability to talk by means of spoken words.
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrections).
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
  • Be able to walk and stand for periods of time of at least 2 (2) hour intervals.
  • Physical strength and agility and free from serious defect that would preclude on from performing the essential functions of the position.
  • Must be able to operate a whistle, orange vest, orange gloves, foul weather gear, police radio, hand held stop signs and other safety devices, department policy and procedure manual, and AAA Handbook for Adult School Crossing Guards.

 

Environmental Conditions:

  • Works in outside weather conditions and occasionally exposed to wet and/ humid conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat.
