Job Description
Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Cultural Services Superintendent, the Museum Program Assistant assists the museum team with various activities outlined in the Essential Functions of the position.
Essential Functions
- Conduct activities for participants at the Mobile Recreation Program.
- Supervise and lead participants through planned arts and crafts activities.
- Prepare, pack, and load supplies for activities.
- Set up/tear down tables, chairs, and canopies at local parks where the activities will be taking place.
- Ensure the safety of participants.
- Provide information to the public about museum programming.
- Required to drive a city vehicle.
- Maintain notes and attendance of programs.
- Support other museum classes, field trips, or outreach events as assigned.
- Perform general maintenance work such as cleaning tables, chairs, and spaces where activities are taking place.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Skill in communicating with the public and program participants.

- Ability to comply with program policies.
Supervisory Controls
The Cultural Services Superintendent assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
Guidelines
Guidelines include Museum policies and City and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
Complexity/Scope of Work
This work consists of general museum program support.
Contacts
- Contacts are typically with youth participants, parents, co-workers, other City employees, and volunteers.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Indoor & outdoor environment.
- Working varied hours, including mornings or evening shifts and some weekends.
- Be able to be active with children and provide clear instructions.
- Climbing ladders.
- Standing for extended periods of time.
- Lifting heavy objects weighing fifty (50) pounds.
- Reaching overhead and above the shoulders.
- Kneeling or crouching.
- Hearing and speaking to communicate information.
- Reading and writing to communicate information.
- Seeing to monitor activities.
- Sensing hot and cold.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility
None.
Minimum Qualifications
- Educational background in recreation, education, or child development is preferable.
- Experience interacting with children and the public is highly desirable.
- Current First Aid/CPR certifications are preferred.
- Bilingual Spanish/English is a highly preferred skill for the position.
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Required to have a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
- All applicants must be able to successfully pass a background check process which includes reference checks and criminal history check; or other.
