About the Role:

The Youth Summer Public Works position offers a unique opportunity for young individuals to gain hands-on experience maintaining streets, water distribution, wastewater collection and parks during the summer months. This role is designed to engage youth in meaningful work that supports the maintenance and improvement of public spaces, facilities, and services within their local communities. Participants will contribute to a variety of tasks fostering a strong work ethic and practical skills. The position aims to develop teamwork, responsibility, and an understanding of public works operations, while promoting civic pride and community involvement. Ultimately, this role serves as a foundational experience that can inspire future career interests in public service, construction, or related fields. This seasonal position is typically 40 hours a week for 8 to 10 weeks from June to August.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 16 to 19 years old.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Basic physical fitness to perform manual labor tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for long durations.
  • Strong willingness to learn and follow instructions carefully.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of tools and equipment used in landscaping or construction.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and a positive attitude.
  • Enrollment in or recent graduation from High School or equivalent.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the maintenance and beautification of public parks, streets, and facilities through tasks such as landscaping, litter removal, and painting.
  • Support skilled public works staff in minor repair and construction projects, including equipment handling and site preparation.
  • Operate basic hand and power tools safely under supervision to complete assigned tasks efficiently.
  • Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for self and team members.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions to enhance job skills and understand project goals.
