Purpose and Scope
Under direct supervision of the Facilities Manager, Maintenance Supervisor or designee, an employee in this class performs routine repetitive housekeeping chores, cleaning, light maintenance duties, and related work. Assignments are received in written work order form or verbally. Employees in this position are required to work odd schedule shifts. Regular full-time employees of this class may be subject to on call assignments.
Examples of Job Duties

- Bends, pushes, pulls and twists repeatedly and performs work from ladders
- Cleans public areas of facilities
- Sets up tables, chairs, podiums, and other equipment for activities
- Vacuums and steam cleans carpeting
- Runs floor scrubber, strips and waxes floors
- Dusts
- Weeds, mows, rakes, plants, removes snow, salts and otherwise maintains grounds around facilities
- Changes light bulbs, fluorescent lamps, smoke detector batteries, and filters
- Paints walls, trim, and other items, stains and finishes items
- Moves heavy objects, which may include household appliances, mattresses, etc.
- Demonstrates ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Writes legibly and speaks clearly
- Works effectively with other staff members and residents
- Performs special assignments as required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Completion of a standard high school or vocational school course.
- One or two years of experience or training in maintenance and cleaning; some experience and demonstrated ability in the use and operation of power equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Some knowledge of maintenance terminology, procedures and equipment utilized in cleaning and grounds maintenance tasks
- Ability to make decisions in accordance with regulations and departmental policies and procedures.
- Ability to learn new tasks as instructed as related to completing required job duties.
- Ability to work around and occasionally with the public.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Michigan and good driving record.

While performing the duties of this job, the individual must regularly and quickly traverse through a large facility and surrounding grounds (including ladders, stairs, tight spaces and uneven terrain); operate a wide variety of tools and equipment; must be able to communicate with individuals in person and by telephone; repetitively operate and manipulate all standard office technology, tools, and equipment; required to occasionally lift, move and secure objects weighing up to and sometimes exceeding 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to detect both visual and audio plant alarms and calls.
