- Starting Salary: $65,707.20
- After Six Months of Successful Employment: $66,872.00
- After One Year of Successful Employment: $70,990.40
- Maximum salary is achieved after three successful years of employment.
NOTE: Annual salary adjustments may also occur, based on collective bargaining agreements.
An employee in this classification is a skilled mechanic and is capable of, and responsible for, repairing cars, trucks, tractors, dump trucks, and other equipment with internal combustion engines. This employee assists Equipment Mechanic Trainees, and higher-level mechanics, and will be required to work some overtime, as required, and is subject to call-in outside of normal working hours. For an Equipment Mechanic I to be promoted to an Equipment Mechanic II, the person must be proficient in the descriptive list of work and satisfy supervisors' expectations.
Illustrative Examples of Work:
- Reline brakes
- Diagnose performance problems and hydraulic issues
- Trace and correct electrical wiring problems
- Replace alternators, starters, shock absorbers, etc.
- Perform oil and filter changes on all types of equipment
- Operate oxyacetylene torches and a MIG Welder to make repairs or fabricate projects, as needed
- Perform related duties as assigned
By the closing date of this announcement, an applicant must:
- Be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien with the right to work in the United States; and
- Be at least 18 years old; and
- Meet one of the following:
- Have a high school diploma or a valid equivalency certificate; or
- Be able to obtain a high school diploma or a valid equivalency certificate within one year of date-of-hire; or
- Have a certification from an industry-related trade / technical school; or
- Be able to obtain a certification from an industry-related trade / technical school within one year of date-of-hire; and
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record; and
- Possess, or be able to obtain within six months, a Group “A” Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake and an “N” (tanker) endorsement; and
- Possess, or be able to obtain within six months, a valid Industrial Truck Driving Permit; and
- Have two years of full-time, paid experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, and/or construction equipment; and
- Meet one of the following:
- Possess and be able to maintain a Michigan Department of State Motor Vehicle Mechanic Certificate as a Master Auto Mechanic; or
- Be able to obtain a Michigan Department of State Motor Vehicle Mechanic Certificate as a Master Auto Mechanic within 18 months of date-of-hire; and
- Be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
NOTE: An employee in this classification is subject to all requirements of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991, as amended.
PARTS OF EXAMINATION AND WEIGHTS
Written Test - 60% Interview - 40%*
The 15 applicants with the highest passing score on the Written Test will be invited to the Interview. Applicants must pass the Written Test and the Interview in order to be placed on the eligible list.
*In the event there are three or fewer candidates who pass the Written Test, the Interview Panel will be waived, and the Parts of Examination and Weights will default to 100% Written Test.
