The City of La Habra is conducting an internal recruitment for the full-time position of Teacher for the Child Development Division. Teachers in this program work with school-age and/or preschool age children for approximately 8-hours/day, 5 days a week (may include a split shift). Candidates must be available to work anytime between the hours of 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The positions are authorized under State rules and funds, are grant-funded for specific programs, and may be of limited-term (subject to continuation of grant).

ABOUT THE POSITION:
Under the direction of the Site Director and/or Lead Teacher, the Teacher position instructs children in activities designed to promote social/emotional, physical health and safety, and cognitive growth; prepares and teaches lessons to school age or preschool age children; assists in the planning programs and activities; oversees assistants and volunteers in the classroom; and performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
(Duties may include, but are not limited to the following):
- Plans and implements lesson plans for school-age or preschool-age children.
- Completes assessment for children in the program to ensure funding guidance is implemented pursuant to the grant contract.
- Oversees classroom and playground activities.
- Teaches, supervises, and instructs children.
- Oversees staff and volunteers.
- Plans and implements parent involvement activities.
- Performs related duties as required.
Qualifying Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Child-development psychology and behavior theories and related conceptual learning and emotional stages.
- Physical development stages in the areas of small and large muscle coordination and nutritional requirements of age groups.
- Art, crafts, music, science, and concepts such as color, geometric shapes for teaching on school age level.
- Supervisory techniques.
Skill and Abilities to:
- Communicate effectively with children and their parents in teaching, informing, and interacting situations.
- Plan nutrition education programs and implement CACFP guidelines for meals served.
- Observe and recognize behaviors or conditions in children that may indicate special attention or Referral.
- Demonstrate art, crafts, music, and physical activities at the level of the pupil.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with teaching team and parents.
- Provide excellent customer service.
Education/Experience Requirements:
Option 1: Applicants must hold a Child Development Teacher Permit or higher.
OR
APPLICANTS WHO DO NOT POSSESS A PERMIT MAY APPLY BY MEETING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:
Option 2: Applicants applying for a Child Development Associate Teacher Permit must have 50 days of experience working with children (minimum of 3 hours per day and within a period of 4 years), plus 12 Child Development Core Units and be able to apply within 30 days of employment. *Must be continuously enrolled in school until obtaining the Child Development Teacher Permit.
OROption 3: Applicants applying for a Child Development Teacher Permit must have 175 days of experience working with children (minimum of 3 hours per day and within a period of 4 years), plus 24 Child Development Core Units and 16 general education units be able to apply within 30 days of employment. OR
Option 4: AA or higher ECE/CD or related field with 3 units of supervised field experience in ECE/CD setting.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) and Bachelor’s Degree is highly desired.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
Pediatric First Aid and Pediatric CPR certification is required (30 days after employment). Must pass California Community Care Licensing fingerprint clearance to work with children.
Conditions of Employment:
- Successful Completion of a criminal history background check.
- Obtain and maintain all certifications and educational requirements as established by state and federal guidelines. Including:
- CPR/First Aid certificate for infants and children.
- TB test; proof of current Influenza, Pertussis and MMR vaccination.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting children or heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Must be able to work safely in an environment containing biological conditions which may be unhealthful or hazardous (such as bodily fluids and waste, germs, childhood diseases). Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching overhead above shoulders and horizontally. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Seeing to monitor student activities and behavior. Must be able to assist with emergency evacuations and exit strategies, including, but not limited to, lifting and carrying children while moving quickly.
MENTAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to work on multiple concurrent tasks with constant interruptions, read and interpret documents and information; use oral communication skills; interact with City staff, elected officials, residents, the general public and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom may be dissatisfied and/or abusive individuals.
VISION: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; visually inspect work in progress, have sufficient eyesight to read programs, hard copy reports, and computer images, and sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements including typing.
HEARING: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction at normal conversational levels in person and over the telephone.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is typically performed in the classroom and outdoor environment. This includes an outdoor play area with climbing structures, sand, and riding toys. Work intermittently in outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold. Noisy at times.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Public Employee Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, all La Habra city employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.
