What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker I (KATS/Transit) position at City of Kingsport?
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the public transit division with the City.
- Washing and cleaning vehicles and facilities; Mowing and landscaping KATS grounds; General care of KATS/Transit facilities;
- Fill-in for KATS bus/van drivers.
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks using appropriate hand and power tools (shovels, rakes, drills, blowers, etc.);
- Operates small equipment (mowers, tractors, skid steer, brush chipper, etc.);
- Maintains facilities (walkways, open green spaces, storage facilities, transit facilities, etc.);
- Operate City-owned vehicles and equipment and responsibly comply with all traffic laws, safety regulations, and city policies;
- Ensures all tasks are completed in a safe and efficient manner;
- Performs minor maintenance/repairs to equipment and vehicles used;
- Performs appropriate inspections and keeps equipment and vehicles clean and in safe working conditions;
- Keeps appropriate records of the tasks performed;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to work independently:
- Knowledge of the appropriate skilled trades associated with the assigned department;
- Knowledge in using hand and power tools in construction and maintenance work;
- Knowledge of methods and practices used in performing skilled building maintenance;
- Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of relevant equipment;
- Knowledge of the elements of construction technology as they relate to the assigned construction, maintenance, and repair activities;
- Skill in performing manual work requiring periods of extensive physical exertion and potential exposure to adverse weather conditions;
- Skill in reading schematics and following written instructions;
- Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing, including tactful and courteous communications with the public;
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, other city personnel, and the public.
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred;
- Experience working in a team environment;
- Valid driver’s license.
- This role includes a condition of continued employment as stated below. Upon successful completion, the employee may be promoted to Maintenance Worker II. Failure to meet the conditions of employment may result in termination of employment.
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), class C, with passenger (P) endorsement from the State of Tennessee or Virginia, within the first 90 days of employment. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a pesticide certification within the first 6 months of employment.
