The City of Jefferson is now accepting applications for a Police Sergeant for our Police Department. This position supervises police patrol officers, traffic section, community services section or detective section of the Police Department. The ideal candidate should be able to perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities and establish integrity among members of the department and public.
Supervises employees; helps determine career development objectives for employees; monitors officers' performance in the field and provides necessary feedback; conducts performance appraisals of officers assigned to team; maintains employee records including: payroll, vacation, leave, overtime, and performance reports and programs statistics as required; ensures team is operating in accordance with city ordinances and regulations; develops and presents training programs for officers and community groups; conducts roll call briefing to include case law and statutory updates; assigns daily work objectives and ensures team is operating in accordance with departmental guidelines and accomplishing established goals.
Exercises sound interview techniques with witnesses and victims of crime and traffic accidents; understands and applies laws of arrest; identifies, collects and secures evidence while retaining chain of custody; reviews criminal cases and makes appropriate assignments; ensures proper case preparation for prosecution; reviews and ensures necessary correction of written reports and case materials; renders credible testimony in a court of law; serves as an expert witness in trials; serves on task forces to ensure the safety of the public through proper apprehension of suspects and thorough investigation of crimes.
Supervises and conducts in-service training and safety training of officers; recommends new or revised operating procedures to ensure all officers have the necessary tools to perform their jobs in accordance with departmental procedures; prepares media releases when Public Information Officer is unavailable.
Serves as a liaison in partnership capacity with schools and community groups to include any agency devoted to juvenile safety issues; and establishes positive, effective relationships with the community, other supervisors, subordinates, officials, criminal justice agencies, and city personnel; prepares reports for higher ranking officers.
Assists with departmental programs to ensure they are performing in a manner to further community policing goals.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience as a State Licensed Public Law Enforcement Officer and possession of a current Missouri State License as a Commissioned Law Enforcement Officer. An accredited Associates' or Bachelors' degree in Law Enforcement or similar field preferred.
Must have a general understanding of modern management practices and theory of law enforcement administration with leadership qualities.
Physical: Ability to maintain physical fitness; stoop, bend, crawl, walk, climb and lift and/or move heavy objects or persons, give chase on foot, and restrain persons within the course of proper police procedures; work in confined areas and outdoors in weather conditions and at all times day/night; walk, sit or stand for long periods of time; possess the physical strength and agility to defend self and/or others in a hostile or combative situation; operate a police vehicle both day and night; and proficiently use firearms.
