POSITION

Under supervision, performs journey-level work in installing, maintaining, and repairing traffic signals and street lighting systems; and leads and provides technical direction to other division personnel.

TASKS
  • Participates and leads the work activities of other traffic and lighting maintenance field personnel;
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain traffic signal controls and auxiliary equipment;
  • Diagnose malfunctions; adjust and replace electronic and mechanical components;
  • Install, inspect, remove, and repair street lights such as light standards, control boxes, light fixtures, lamps, and circuitry;
  • Repair, replace, or modify electric and electronic components, controllers, relays, switches, fuses, timers, and other parts.
  • Investigate complaints and reports of traffic light malfunctions;
  • Assist in the design of electrical circuits and systems for street lighting and traffic signals;
  • Inspects the work of contractors during the course of construction and upon completion;
  • Troubleshoot and repair communications lines from computer to individual intersections and maintain computer map of intersections;
  • Keep accurate records of assignments, status reports, supplies, parts, and other materials needed to perform duties.


QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or Associate's degree in Electronics or a closely related field, AND four (4) years of experience in complex electrical maintenance and repair, including traffic signal systems and street lighting systems. Must possess at the time of application and maintain a valid California Driver’s License. Incumbents in this position will be required to obtain and maintain Level 2 Technician Certification issued by the International Municipal Signal Association.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the repair of traffic signal and street lighting systems; of components and parts of electronic and mechanical devices used for traffic signal and street lighting; quality principles of electrical system design and repair; and of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions;
  • Skilled in understanding and interpreting written and oral instructions, including blueprints and wiring diagrams;
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions relative to work methods and tools, prepare simple reports, and work at heights, and effectively communicate verbally and in writing in English


WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in an outdoor environment. Work may require frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting 50 pounds. Incumbents may be exposed to repetitive motion, vision to monitor, extreme weather, moving traffic, construction sites, and toxic fumes and chemicals.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants whose experience best meets the city's needs will be invited to participate in the examination for this position. Candidates must have access to a computer with internet, video, and audio capabilities to participate in our examination process. The examination may consist of one or more of the following: (1) Training & Experience Evaluation, (2) Writing Exercise, and (3) Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a panel of subject matter experts. Candidates must receive a score of 70 or higher to have their names placed on the active eligibility list for one year. The top three ranks on the Eligibility List will have their application materials forwarded to the hiring authority for a selection interview.
