The purpose of this position within the organization is to assist in planning, organizing, and delivering a variety of community recreation programs and activities at an assigned community center.This position works under general supervision of the Community Center Supervisor; may supervises non-departmental instructors, volunteers and part-time staff.

- Associates degree or two (2) years of college level or post secondary education in Recreation, Physical Education or related field.
- Requires two (2) years of full time equivalent experience in recreation work at a professional or paraprofessional level in one or more of the primary functional areas of recreation.
- When assigned to Therapeutic Recreation: must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in a therapeutic recreation environment, to include experience in settings such as: adapted physical education, special education, and residential/institutional settings inclusive of individuals with disabilities.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
- Must possess or obtain basic CPR/First Aid certifications within 90 days of employment.
- When assigned to Therapeutic Recreation a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification is preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
- Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
Additional Requirements
- Requires shift work to include some nights, weekends and holidays.
- May require some local travel.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedules
