Build the Foundation for Greensboro’s Future — Bring Your Surveying Skills to the Field!

Measure it. Mark it. Build it.

The City of Greensboro is looking for a Surveying Technician to join our Engineering and Inspections Department and play an important role in supporting the infrastructure that keeps our community moving.

If you enjoy working outdoors, using precision equipment, solving practical problems, and seeing your work become part of roads, utilities, and other community improvements, this could be the opportunity for you.

As part of a two-person surveying crew, you'll work alongside the Surveying Party Chief to collect accurate field information and support construction and development projects throughout Greensboro.

Why You’ll Love Working With Us

At the City of Greensboro, your work has a direct connection to the community.

As a Surveying Technician, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Make an impact: Support projects that contribute to safe, sustainable neighborhoods and reliable infrastructure.
  • Work in the field: Spend your days applying surveying skills in real-world environments rather than sitting behind a desk.
  • Develop your technical expertise: Gain hands-on experience with levels, total stations, GPS equipment, and data collectors.
  • Build a career: Develop valuable surveying and engineering skills that can open doors to advancement.
  • Work as a team: Collaborate closely with experienced surveying professionals.
  • Serve Greensboro: Help ensure construction and infrastructure projects are accurately surveyed and properly supported.

About the Role

The Surveying Technician works as a member of the Engineering Division's Surveying Section. The Surveying Section operates with two individuals per crew, providing an opportunity for hands-on collaboration and mentorship.

In this position, you will assist the Surveying Party Chief with:

  • Construction stakeouts.
  • Topographical surveys.
  • Property surveys.
  • Setting and marking hubs and stakes for utility and road construction.
  • Operating levels, total stations, GPS equipment, and data collectors.
  • Collecting and recording accurate field survey information.
  • Cleaning, maintaining, and adjusting surveying instruments.
  • Clearing sight lines and cutting brush to establish appropriate surveying conditions.
  • Assisting with traffic control when working in or near roadways.
  • Applying principles, techniques, and procedures related to engineering science and technology.
  • Performing mathematical calculations involving arithmetic and geometry.
  • Applying general knowledge of North Carolina boundary law to field and office procedures.
  • Communicating effectively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and other stakeholders.

What You'll Do in the Field

This is an active, hands-on position. You should be comfortable:

  • Working outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Reaching and working around vegetation and other field conditions.
  • Clearing brush and maintaining clear lines of sight.
  • Occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Working safely around traffic and construction environments.

We're looking for someone who combines technical ability, attention to detail, teamwork, communication skills, and a willingness to work in the field.
