An employee in this class performs responsible public safety communications and administrative support work for the law enforcement, fire, and rescue functions, county agencies, and forestry in the community, including gathering medical information to provide Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) information to callers.
Examples of Duties
Graduation from high school and public contact and customer service experience; communications and dispatching experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Health
We offer a high-deductible health plan with a $3300 deductible (Single). This program includes a Health Savings Account (HSA). Employee only coverage is completely funded by the County, PLUS the County contributes $1200 to the HSA annually.
Dental
Our dental plan provides for preventive services, such as cleanings each year, at 100%. There is a $25 deductible for other services. Basic services pays at 80% and other major services at 50%. The County contributes $14.47 per month for employee coverage.
Voluntary Plans
Employees may choose from a variety of plans arranged through Mark III Benefits. These include AFLAC Accident, Critical Illness and Hospital Indemnity plans; MetLife Group Cancer; MassMutual Whole Life; and Superior Vision plans. In addition we offer Short-term and Long-term disability.
Life Insurance
The County provides $10,000 Basic Life insurance for employees. An employee may choose to purchase additional voluntary term life insurance.
Retirement
Pension is offered through the N.C. Local Government Employees' Retirement System. Employees are required to contribute 6% of gross wages toward their account. The County also contributes at 14.40% (law enforcement 16.08%).
401(k) and 457 are supplemental retirement plans administered by Empower. For the 401(k) plan, employees contributing a minimum of 1% are eligible for the County contribution of 2.5% toward their account. Employees contributing at least 3% or greater are eligible for a County Contribution of 3%. Law Enforcement Officers receive a 5% County contribution. The 401(k) plan offers both pre-tax and Roth after-tax contributions. The 457 plan is tax-deferred with no minimum contribution requirements.
Longevity Pay
The County offers longevity pay to employees with at least 5 years of continuous service.

Examples of Duties
- Receives routine and emergency telephone calls and personal requests for assistance concerning crimes, fires, rescue needs or general information, identifies the locations of callers to choose and dispatch the proper law enforcement, fire, or rescue department or unit.
- Operates a variety of electronic equipment to maintain contact with Sheriff and Police personnel, multiple fire units and emergency rescue personnel, emergency medical service, and other law enforcement units.
- Interviews callers to determine nature of concern and provides information about the situation as it develops and/or background information from the DCI; provides pre-arrival medical instruction using EMD system.
- Operates terminal connected with the DCI to obtain driver’s history, vehicle registration data and criminal record information; checks warrants; runs vehicle inquiries and driver license history checks for law enforcement agencies.
- Maintains communications logs and reports including the nature of calls, actions taken and the times involved.
- Monitor public and private fire and security alarm systems; activates monitors to dispatch volunteer agencies; transfers appropriate calls to state patrol.
- Monitors activities of law enforcement officers on patrol and makes radio contact to insure safety; takes and transmits personal and departmental messages.
- Works in the communications center to receive calls during weather and other emergencies such as hurricanes, ice and snow.
- Answers calls after normal 5pm for utilities, animal control and DSS.
- Performs routine maintenance of office equipment and work area.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Special Requirements: Must be able to obtain:
- Certification by the State of North Carolina as a DCI Operator
- Certification as EMD, EFD and CPR certification
- NC DCI Certification.
- NC Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission Telecommunicator course
- Criminal records check, drug screen, references and transcripts will be required for the successful candidate;
